FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's track and field team hosted Cal Poly today in their first and only home meet of the season as the women were victorious in a close meet and the men lost a close battle. Both teams had student-athletes set multiple personal records.
"Today was a big win for our ladies," said head coach Scott Winsor. "The throwers and sprinters really carried us to the win. The throwers swept each of their events, placing first and second in every single throw. We had some really strong performances in the sprints and the ladies were solid all the way through."
The Fresno State women's track and field team inched by Cal Poly winning with a final score of 100-97. This victory was largely due to the strong performance of the throwers.
The first women's field event on the sunny Saturday morning was the hammer throw. Freshman Meagan McKee led the way with a first place finish. McKee's winning throw was marked at 179-11 (54.84m) and was also a personal best. Right behind McKee was J'Quyra Moncur-Blue with a second place finish and a mark of 179-4 (54.67m).
McKee heaved a second victory in the discus event with a mark of 144-01 (43.92m). AnaManu Folau finish second with a throw of 141-9 (43.20m).
In the shot put event, Rosario Sanchez placed first with a mark of 47-3 (14.4m) and Caitlin Byrd placed second, marking 40-4.25 (12.30m).
The javelin competitors also had two strong performances for a 1-2 finish. Jacqueline Vazquez won the event with a throw of 144-8 (44.10m) and Christina Cabias took second with a throw of 134-9 (41.08m)
In the fastest race of the meet, the 100-meter dash, junior Shanelle Stephens bolted to a first place finish. She crossed the finish line at 12.11 and scored some crucial points for her team.
Breeauna Thompson had two victories in the sprint races. She sped to first place finishes in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Thompson clocked a finish of 24.83 in the 200- and 55.29 in the 400-meter dash.
Another strong performance on the women's side came from pole vaulter Andrea Greenman who was the only competitor for the Dogs. Greenman went against two Mustangs and posted a vault of 11-9.75 (3.6m) for a first place victory.
On the men's side, they lost a tight battle in a final score of 104-90. The men had multiple standout performances.
"For the men it was a tough and close loss," said Winsor. "14 points in a track meet is not very much and is a very close meet."
A standout performance came from Remington Blair who clocked a 47.32 in the 400-meter dash and a first place finish. Blair was also the anchor to the 4x400-meter relay team. The junior was passed the baton 10-meters behind and ran him down to come from behind for first place.
Andrew Mashler won the 110-meter hurdles race. This was the sophomores first time competing on the college high hurdles and was victorious.
Justin Lovingood got off to a good season start in long jump with a win. As a freshman he came back and got second in triple.
Darian Hutson had an outstanding performance in the high jump. In his first collegiate meet he cleared 6-6.75 (2.0m) and a strong first place finish.
In the throws, Brice Sandri won discus with a throw of 163-3 (49.75m).. Both Gabriel Acero and Raul Gonzalez went 1-2 in the hammer throw.
"All in all good day," said Winsor. "It was a good day for our women. The men were up early and lost a few close ones that put us behind. As a team, we are getting better."
