Dogs Sweep in Doubles and Earn Two

FRESNO, Calif. - The 51st-ranked Fresno State men's tennis team dropped its second home match of the season against the No. 49 Cal Poly Mustangs, 4-3 on Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs came into the meeting with a tremendous appearance at the 122nd Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif. No. 33 doubles team Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier advanced to the final round of competition. Siddharth Alapati and David Ayoun advanced to the final round in the consolation bracket.
Against Cal Poly, the `Dogs started the match with a statement, by sweeping the doubles point.
No. 33 de Villiers and Boutillier defeated No. 41 Andrew Dome and Alexander Sonesson, 8-4. Francis Alcantara and Jean-Charles Diame set aside Marco Comuzzo and Jordan Bridge. Siddharth Alapati and David Ayoun picked up a victory over Brian McPhee and Drew Jacobs.
Boutillier put the Bulldogs up 2-0, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bridge.
Junior Diame earned the final point for Fresno State with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over McPhee on Court 4.
Senior de Villiers dropped the first point to Cal Poly, with a defeat by No. 96 singles player Dome, 6-4, 6-0.
Alcantara fell to Sonesson on court number three, 6-2, 6-3, giving Cal Poly its second point of the match.
The final two matches came on courts five and six.
Senior Alapati won the first set on court five against Comuzzo. Battling back and forth for each point the Mustang earned the second set and pushed them into a third set. Going into extra games the Mustangs took the lead and held it to the end with a, 7-5 victory. This gave Cal Poly its third point and tied with Fresno State, with one match still in play.
Ayoun has recently returned to the Bulldogs lineup, competed in court six against Sebastian Bell. Ayoun picked up the first set but proceeded to drop the next two after three hours of competition.
Fresno State Bulldogs continue at home tomorrow against No. 50 Santa Clara at noon.
