Dogs Start WAC Play Strong

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 44 Fresno State (9-8, 1-0 WAC) picks up its first conference victory, defeating Western Athletic Conference competition foe No. 56 Hawai'i (4-9, 0-1 WAC), 5-2 in Moscow, Idaho on Friday afternoon. This was the first match between the two teams since last year's grand WAC Tournament title match which Hawai'i defeated Fresno State at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Fresno State fell two out of three in doubles but earned a solid lead in singles and won five out of the six matches.
In doubles, No. 17 doubles team Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier started their WAC play with a tremendous force defeating the Rainbow Warrior's number one doubles team, Leo Rosenberg and Jeremy Tweedt, 8-1.
In singles, the victories continually rolled in for the Bulldogs. De Villiers dropped his first set to No. 122 singles player Dennis Lajola but rallied back and earned the next two sets to his favor and earned a point for the Bulldogs, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
No. 115 Boutillier defeated his opponent, Rosenberg, in a straight set match victory, 6-3, 6-4 giving the Dogs the lead over Hawai'i. Jean-Charles Diame snatched 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tweedt on court No. 3, giving Fresno State its third point. David Ayoun moved up courts to number five for the match and proved the decision a right one. Ayoun defeated Dmytro Kovalyov in a three set match triumph, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Nick Papac rejoined the Dogs on the courts on the No. 6 court, in a straight set match victory, Papac defeated Jared Spiker, 6-2, 6-2.
Hawai'i earned its point on court four.
Fresno State competes in a double header tomorrow in Moscow, Idaho against WAC opponent's No. 54 Idaho at 1 p.m. and Utah State at 5 p.m.
