Bulldogs Conquer Rebels, 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. - The 25th-nationally ranked Fresno State men's tennis team beat No. 63 UNLV, 5-2, on Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center for its eighth-straight win.
The Bulldogs (8-1) earned the doubles point in a battle against the Rebels (3-8) to start the match. At No. 2 doubles, Zachary Leslie and Sai Kartik Nakireddi bested UNLV's Willie Sublette and Tamas Batyi, 8-3. The Rebels evened the score at the No. 1 spot when Brian Kenyon and Bernard Shoeman defeated Remi Boutillier and Francis Alcantara, 8-5. David Ayoun and partner Jean-Charles Diame clinched the point for the `Dogs with their victory over Johannes Markel and Rene Ruegamer, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles the team remained strong. Ayoun was the first Bulldog singles victory of the day when he bested Charlie Alvarado, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot. The Rebels answered back at No. 3 singles where Kenyon defeated Diame, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, 45th-ranked Alcantara beat Alex Bull, 6-2, 6-4. The `Dogs clinched the win at No. 1 singles, when No. 19 Boutillier defeated Ruegamer, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Shortly after, UNLV's Batyi beat Leslie, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. The day finished with a close match at No. 6 singles where freshman Reid DeLaubenfels came from behind to defeat the Rebels' Schoeman, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Bulldogs travel to sunny San Diego on Thursday to face San Diego State at 1 p.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
