FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State interior players controlled tonight's game against Cal State Stanislaus as the Bulldogs posted a 65-36 win at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs' post players accounted for 51 of the team's points.
"I thought we started out of the gates pretty good tonight, obviously Alex (Sheedy) and Bego (Faz Davalos) did a good job," Fresno State head coach Jaime White said. "We challenged Bego with running the floor a little bit more and beating her man down the floor and I think she did that about 90 percent of the time tonight so that was nice. I felt good about the first half. I think we only had three turnovers and that was something we wanted to focus on. I thought we did a good job defensively. Anytime you hold a team to 36 points you're doing something right."
Senior forward Alex Sheedy (20) and redshirt freshman center Bego Faz Davalos (19) combined for 39 of those points, while junior center Toni Smith accounted for eight. Faz Davolos controlled the paint from the start as she totaled 14 rebounds in the game for her first career double-double. The native of Monterrey, Mexico also came three blocks shy of a triple-double, posting seven on the night, two more than her career high which she had Sunday in her Bulldog debut.
"Bego brings an amazing presence to our team," Sheedy said of her teammate. "She's terrible to practice against because she blocks everything but I think it's great that she brings that when she plays. I think if we continue to keep having nights like this it will be very helpful for our team."
Fresno State got out to a quick start for the second game in a row with back-to-back buckets from Sheedy before a layup from Faz Davalos. With the score at 8-4 just over two minutes in, the 'Dogs went on a 12-2 run with all 12 points coming from its post players.
When the Warriors cut their deficit to 15 at 33-18 with just under two minutes remaining in the half, the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 26 over the next two-plus minutes with 11-straight points coming from Faz Davalos and Sheedy.
The lead hovered in the mid-20s throughout the second half as a strong defensive effort from Fresno State never allowed the visitors to get their deficit under 23 in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs built the lead up to as high as 31 after a free throw from Faz Davalos with 43 seconds remaining, but a late field goal from the Warriors made it a 65-36 final.
Despite shooting 24 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc and hitting 40 percent (27-of-68) overall from the field, Fresno State used a suffocating defense to hold their second opponent in a row to under 30 percent shooting as Cal State Stanislaus managed only 14 field goals on 63 attempts (22 percent). The Warriors were also held to only 11 percent from the 3-point line, hitting 2-of-19.
That defense was consistently turned into offense as 21 Warrior turnovers led to 18 points for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State will head to Los Angeles this weekend for its first road test of the season, the first of three contests on the away from the Save Mart Center before returning home in December. The road swing starts with USC at the Galen Center on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m., PT.
