FRESNO, Calif. -After dismissing the second day of the Bulldog Classic due to rainy conditions, the Fresno State women's tennis team competed in the final day of the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 2 at both the Spalding G. Wathens Tennis Center and the Sierra Sport and Racquet Club.
Representing the Bulldogs on the second and final day of the classic was Aishwarya Agrawal, Rana Sherif Ahmed, Sofya Malysheva, Tanya Murtagh, Anne Susdorf and Anneka who competed against players from the University of Oregon, Pacific, Portland State, Cal Poly and Cal State Stanislaus.
Sunday kicked off at 8 a.m. on Fresno State's campus at the Spalding G. Wathens Tennis Center with the final rounds of doubles play where the `Dogs went 2-for-2 defeating Oregon and Cal Poly to advance to the final round. Due to time restraints, the final round of doubles was not played on Sunday.
At the conclusion of doubles play, the tournament location was moved to the Sierra Sport and Racquet Club- the site of the 2014 Mountain West Championships. Fresno State had a successful day in singles as well, going 7-for-9 on Sunday and 10-for-14 on the weekend.
"Going 10-2 on the last day of the tournament is a great for by itself but the way the team fought through every match and handling whatever was thrown at them makes the coaches extremely proud." head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We are just happy with our progress and excited about our last fall tournament as girls really relish the team atmosphere and are looking forward to working hard to defend our titles."
Senior Aishwarya Agrawal made it to the final round of Flight A singles where she recorded her third singles victory of the weekend over Nia Rose of Oregon, 6-3, 7-6, 9-7. Despite the final round of Flight C singles not being played, senior Tayna Murtagh landed in the semifinal round by defeating Oregon's Katie Hueffner after the match was cut short due to injury.
The seven-person returning roster was presented with their 2014 Mountain West Championships rings during the third quarter of the home football game on Friday night. The reigning champions hope to build off of their success last year as they move closer to the spring 2015 season.
