'Dogs Open Play at Northwest Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis teamed kicked off the ITA Northwest Regional on Friday, finishing the day with a 10-3 record. Four Bulldogs advanced to Saturday's Round of 32 in singles play while each of their three doubles teams will also compete on Saturday morning.
"I'm proud of all of the 'Dogs today," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We could see our talent level and what we have been working on. This tournament has many good players and to have a 10-3 record after day one says a lot of great things about our team."
Anneka Watts, Galina Bykova and Rana Sherif Ahmed each picked up a pair of singles victories on Friday. Watts and Bykova both advanced to the Round of 32 by earning a three-set win in their first matches before straight-set victories in their second matches. Rana Sherif Ahmed swept through both of her opening two matches in straight-set wins.
All three will begin Saturday's singles play at 10 a.m., PT. Watts will face fourth-seeded Denise Starr (Cal), Rana Sherif Ahmed is set to face No. 2 Klara Fabikova (Cal) and Bykova will meet San Jose State's Marie Klockner.
Also advancing to the Round of the 32 was No. 9 Maiar Sherif Ahmed. After a bye in the opening round, she defeated Shanna Dos Santos (San Francisco), 6-2, 6-0, to move on to tomorrow's round. She will face Washington's Stacey Fung on Saturday morning.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' pair of Bykova and Emma Wilson won their opening match 8-3 over Washington State's team of Matejevic/Monahan. The teams of Anneka and Sophie Watts and Maiar and Rana Sherif Ahmed each received a bye through the first round and will begin play on Saturday at 9 a.m.
