Maiar Sherif Ahmed Reaches Regional Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. - Fresno State's Maiar Sherif Ahmed pulled off a straight-set upset on Sunday over second-seeded Klara Fabikova of Cal at the ITA Northwest Regional. Fabikova, who is ranked No. 16 in the country, is the best win of Sherif Ahmed's Bulldog career.
The Bulldog sophomore who ranks No. 104 in the ITA rankings continued her stellar play this weekend with the 6-2, 7-6(6) victory. She has still not surrendered a set in the regional.
"I'm proud of all of our 'Dogs this weekend as we represented our program very well," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We had a lot of good wins and definitely made ourselves better. Getting two doubles teams to the quarterfinals was a great feat but I know these 'Dogs want more so we will learn from what did this weekend and get better from it.
"Maiar had a great win today and we look forward to watching her play another top player in the country tomorrow. It was a big improvement for her on last year's match [with Fabikova]."
Sherif Ahmed and Fabikova last met in January in Sherif Ahmed's first collegiate singles match, a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Cal's No. 2 player.
Ahmed, the No. 9 seed in the regional will now face third-seeded Caroline Doyle of Stanford on Monday at 10 a.m., PT. Doyle is currently ranked No. 17 in the nation. The match will stream live via gostanford.com.
