PROVO, Utah - The Fresno State football team fell 52-10 to BYU in its final road game of the season on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-8) were tied with BYU (8-3) 3-3 after the first quarter and had held the Cougars to 0-of-4 on third-down tries, but after that BYU went for 418 yards and 49 points the rest of the way. Fresno State gained just 275 total yards in the game, its fifth game being held to under 300 yards.
"You turn the ball over four times, it's hard to win," head coach Tim DeRuyter said. "You have to meet that on defense and get more takaways. We have to get our guys to take care of the football and make good decisions."
Quarterback Zack Greenlee, one week after throwing for six touchdown passes in a win at Hawai`I was limited to 125 yards passing and was picked off three times. He completed just 14-of-41 passes in the game.
Cougar quarterback Tanner Mangum was 24-of-37 passing for 336 yards and one touchdown. He led BYU to 478 yards before exiting early in the fourth when his Cougars were up 45-3. BYU finished the game with 520 yards of total offense.
Bulldog outside linebacker Ejiro Ederaine moved into a tie for second in Mountain West history in career tackles for a loss. He had one in the game, which came on a sack when he forced a fumble that the `Dogs recovered for their only take-away in the game. With 44.0 career tackles for a loss, he now stands three behind the Mountain West record holder Miles Burris of San Diego State with one game remaining.
Fresno State's first score was set up by a wonderful play on special teams by Delvon Hardaway. BYU punter Jonny Linehan attempted a fake punt and Hardaway was the only one who stayed home, made the tackle in space that prevented what would have been a huge gain and a first down.
Instead, Hardaway's heads-up play gave the Bulldogs the ball on the Cougar 24-yard line. It led to a 28-yard Kody Kroening field goal to put Fresno State on the scoreboard first, 10 minutes into the game.
Cougar kicker Trevor Samson tied the game up late in the first quarter with a 40-yard field goal and then BYU took the lead in the first two minutes of the second on a one-yard touchdown run by Francis Bernard.
BYU's secondary then made two plays on back-to-back Bulldog drives that opened the game up. It started when Kai Nacum picked off Greenlee and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Then after a Fred Warner interception, Mangum hit Moroni Laulu-Pututau on an 18-yard touchdown pass to up the Cougar lead to 24-3.
The second half was all BYU. The Cougars tacked on 21 more points on 292 yards over the final two quarters. Fresno State's lone touchdown in the second half came on a 29-yard rushing touchdown by Kilton Anderson with 8:42 left in the game.
Fresno State looks to send its senior class off with a win next Saturday when the `Dogs host Colorado State in the last game of the season.
