LAS VEGAS - Trailing by three after a 3-pointer by Kaitlyn Mileto, Fresno State used a 14-0 run, aided by eight of junior forward Moriah Faulk's 16 second-half points as the Bulldogs pushed past Wyoming, 74-66, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament on Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. The win was the third for the `Dogs over Wyoming this season and extended their MW tournament win streak to seven.
Senior forward Alex Sheedy accounted for 19 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season while playing every minute. The Australian saw multiple double and triple teams throughout the night in the paint, but created enough space to flip shots in. With the 19 points, Sheedy moved into eighth place on Fresno State's all-time scoring list with 1,358 points, passing Tierre Wilson.
After only playing five minutes in the first half and not scoring a point, Faulk took over in the second half, scoring 16 clutch points and grabbing four rebounds in 16 minutes. It was the most she has scored in a game this season.
Senior guard Alex Furr also added 15 points, going 3-of-4 from outside while going 6-of-6 from the line. Point guards Raven Fox and Shauqunna Collins also added 10 points apiece and produced six combined steals.
Every point was need as the Cowgirls wouldn't go away for much of the game as four of them scored in double figures, including point guard Marquelle Dent who had a game-high 26 points and was a constant threat driving to the basket.
After holding Wyoming's 3-point shooters in check on Feb. 25, holding the Cowgirls to a season-low three 3's, the Bulldogs did one better tonight as Wyoming hit only two 3-pointers as they were 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc, despite shooting 45.3 percent overall, slightly better than Fresno State's 43.9 percent.
The No. 3-seeded Bulldogs will face No. 2-seeded New Mexico on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m., PT. The game will stream live on the Mountain West Network. Christian Lukens will be on the call on ESPN 940 AM.
The game started out fast with both team hitting over 50 percent of its shots. Fur hit her first two 3-point attempts as the `Dogs got out to a quick lead at 8-3.
Leading 16-13 with 11:25 to go in the half after layup by Collins, Wyoming went on an 8-0 to grab its first lead of the game at 21-16 with after a four minute drought by Fresno State
A jumper by junior center Toni Smith started a 9-0 run that saw a pair of steal and transition layups from Raven Fox that sandwiched Furr's third 3-point of the half. The run helped the Bulldogs grab the lead back at 25-21 with 3:39 to go.
The Cowgirls finished the half on a 6-2 run as the two sides went into halftime knotted up at 27-27.
After the two teams went back and forth to start the second half, a 3-pointer from Kaitlyn Mileto with 16:16 on the clock aided a quick 5-0 spurt for the Cowgirls as they took a 38-34 lead. Fresno State was forced to call a timeout to slow settle things down.
Faulk then came to life, scoring six of the team's next eight points as the `Dogs took a 41-40 lead with 13:10 to go. Wyoming then grabbed the lead and either held a lead or the game was tied for the next five minutes.
After Sheedy hit a jumper to tie the game 50-50 with 7:32 to go, Mileto dropped a deep 3 that appeared to sway momentum in Wyoming's favor with seven minutes on the clock, but the Bulldogs put the clamps down from that point on the defensive and began forcing the ball inside.
Fresno State went on a 14-0 run over the next five-plus minutes as Faulk accounted for eight of them. Four free throws from Furr, a pair from Collins and Sheedy during the final minutes put the game on ice.
The Bulldogs helped themselves throughout the second half, turning the ball over twice and dishing seven assists.
