FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team fell 4-3 to UC Davis Saturday night at Beiden Field. The Aggies scored two runs in the eighth, and one more in the ninth to seal the comeback victory and even the series at one game apiece.
Fresno State used seven pitchers on Saturday as starter Dylan Lee exited the game after three innings. Tim Borst was charged with loss in relief. Borst pitched 3 2/3 innings, the most of any Bulldog pitcher Saturday night.
UC Davis took a 3-2 lead with a two-RBI double in the eighth when second baseman Tino Lipson connected for triple against Brennon Williams, scoring baserunners that were inherited from Borst's stint on the mound. The runs snapped a streak of 19 scoreless innings tossed by the Bulldog bullpen.
Fresno State scored its first two runs in the sixth. Taylor Tempel scored Brody Russell from first on a triple down the right field line. One batter later, Taylor Ward doubled to score Tempel for the Bulldogs first lead of the game, 2-1.
Each team plated a run in the ninth. In the top half, the Aggies scored its second unearned run of the game on a fielding error. The same miscue that penalized the 'Dogs in the first inning.
Fresno State rallied in the home half of the ninth behind timely hitting from Manny Argomaniz and an Aggie error. Torin Goldstein connected for a single, and on the throw to third directed to out Argomaniz, the ball sailed high, allowing him to score and bring the 'Dogs within one.
Zach Stone earned his fourth save of the season as he induced pinch-hitter Korby Batesole to groundout for the final out. Orlando Razo (4-1) picked up the win in a 7 1/3 inning outing.
The loss marks the third loss at Beiden Field for the Bulldogs this season, all by a single run. Fresno State moves to 10-10 overall with the loss, while UC Davis improves to 11-7-1.
The Sunday rubber match is set for 1:05 p.m. at Beiden Field between the Bulldogs and Aggies.
