FULLERTON, Calif.- The Fresno State softball team won 9-0 against the University of Iowa during the `Dogs first game of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Junior Jill Compton threw her third no-hitter and first career perfect game against the Hawkeyes on Friday.
"That was an exciting game," head coach Trisha Ford said. "Jill and Paige did a great job working with each other. Jill had tremendous presence on the mound and was attacking the zone. It was crucial for us to come out and get the first one to set the tone for the weekend."
Compton is only the ninth Bulldog to throw a perfect game, with the most recent being tossed by Mackenzie Oaks in 2010. In her fifth complete game of the season, the right-hander recorded nine strikeouts on the night including three consecutively in the top of the second inning. Compton allowed no batters to reach base in the five inning game against Iowa.
All nine of the Fresno State's runs came in the first two innings with five Bulldogs recording one or more runs. The first inning was highlighted by catcher Paige Gumz clearing the bases with a shot over the center fielders head to give the `Dogs an early lead of 3-0. Gumz was driven in by a ball up the middle from Alyssa Villalpando to end the first inning with four runs on three hits.
Michelle Solomon put the `Dogs up 6-0 in the second inning after scoring two Bulldog baserunners, followed by Gumz who drove in her fourth run of the night.
Villalpando, Gumz and Bria Kennedy led the team posting multiple hits in three at-bats against Iowa. Brenna Moss tied her season high after drawing her second consecutive walk of the game in the second inning, and reached home safely two times for the `Dogs on Friday.
The `Dogs now hold a 5-2 all-time record over the University of Iowa with the last meeting being in 2012 at the Cathedral City Classic.
Following tonight's game, the Bulldogs will face No. 1 Florida (26-0) and No. 2 Oregon (16-3) on Saturday for the second day of the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.
"Tomorrow is an opportunity for us to come and battle with the No. 1 and No. 2 programs in the nation," Ford added. "Not many teams get this opportunity and we will give it our all, the chips will fall where they fall."
