LAS VEGAS -- Facing 20-mph winds, blowing sand and its third nationally-ranked opponent this week, the Fresno State men's tennis prevailed, defeating No. 75 UNLV, 4-1, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs improved to 14-7 on the year and are 2-1 in their current week-long four-match road trip against ranked opponents.
"The way these guys handled themselves on the road against a tough nationally ranked conference opponent in one of the toughest conditions I have ever seen a dual match played in, it was very impressive," head coach Evan Austin said. "I hope the guys can take a lot of confidence from this match and finish the season strong."
Fresno State earned the doubles point as Sai Kartik Nakireddi and Nikolas Papic improved to 11-3 together after defeating Denys Pume and Alexandr Cozbinov, 6-4, to start play. The duo of Euan McIntosh and Youssef Hassan, which had recently moved up to the No. 1 spot, then outlasted Ace Matias and Adam Gage-Brown for a 7-5 victory.
The momentum from doubles continued over to singles competition as Papic, in his first match this season at No. 1, defeated Matias in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Ruben Alberts pulled the Rebels back within one with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Hassan on Court Six.
That was as close as UNLV would get as Adam Glynn pulled the Bulldogs within one point of winning the dual match with a three-set win over Adam Gage-Brown at No. 4. On Court Five, Eric Komati then clinched the match for the `Dogs as he topped Cozbinov, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
The win was Fresno State's second over a ranked foe this season. The team will now face its fourth-straight Top 75 team in a week when it travels to No. 38 Stanford on Tuesday. The dual match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., PT.
