Willis Powers `Dogs Past Tigers

STOCKTON, Calif.- - On a bye weekend from conference play, the Fresno State softball team faced the Pacific Tigers for a single non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. Posting six hits on the day, the `Dogs topped the Tigers 5-0 to extend its winning streak to eight games.
The Bulldogs improve to 37-14 on the season while holding a 17-4 record in Mountain West play.
Whitney Smith tallied the `Dogs first hit of the game to start the third inning, advancing on a wild pitch and scoring from second on a single up the middle from Malia Rivers. Kierra Willis gave Fresno State a 4-0 lead in the third with a three-run shot over the right-center fence, giving her eight home runs on the season. As the `Dogs cleanup batter, Willis led the team offensively with two hits in three at-bats and four runs batted in on Saturday.
Rivers and Smith both posted one hit early in the game while Solomon, Willis and Gumz contributed to a seventh inning rally tacking on an additional three hits for Fresno State.
Six-time Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, Jill Compton (26-10) drew her 38th start in the circle and went the distance of six innings with seven strikeouts before junior Hannah Harris made a seventh-inning appearance, capping the game with three consecutive outs.
Looking Ahead
Fresno State will compete in its final regular season series against UNLV starting on Thursday, May 7 at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Leading the Mountain West by two games, the `Dogs are in line to inherit the conference title for the first time since 2009.
