Diamond 'Dogs wrap up Summer League play

Fresno, Calif. - With the start of classes set for next week, many Fresno State Bulldog baseball players will be returning to campus after spending time this summer playing in various summer leagues across the country. After taking a mid-season-look, let's take a look at how each player wrapped their summer.
Anthony Arias, Pitcher, Brewster Whitecaps (Cape Cod League)
Arias, a redshirt sophomore, played for the Brewster Whitecaps (Mass.) out of the Cape Cod League this summer. The southpaw from Fairfield, Calif., pitched in 14 games making four starts. He posted a 1-3 record with a 6.26 ERA throwing 27.1 innings and striking out 38 batters. His best outing of the season came on July 7 picking up the win over the YD Red Soxs tossing five innings allowing four hits, two earned runs and notched 10 strikeouts. Arias also posted a 10-strikeout performance in his first start of the summer on June 9 in a 5-4 win over Wareham.
Aaron Arruda, Outfielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Metro Collegiate League of Illinois)
The sophomore outfiedler from Fresno played this summer with the Crystal Lake Cardinals of the Metro Collegiate League of Illinois. Appearing in 17 of the Cardinals' 24 games and helping Crystal Lake capture the North Division title, Arruda was among the team leaders with a .369 average in a team-high 71 at-bats. He led the club with 24 hits along with scoring nine runs and driving in eight RBIs. Arruda was also among the team leaders in on-base percentage (.408) and slugging percentage (.415). In addition to being named a Metro League All-Star, he was also named the Outstanding Hitter of the World Series and a member of the All-World Series Team.
Korby Batesole, Infielder, Anchorage Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
Batesole ventured up to Alaska this summer to play for the Anchorage Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League. The infiedler from Clovis and son of head coach Mike Batesole appeared in 27 games collecting 13 hits, including one triple, scored four runs and drove in three RBIs. In an 8-4 win over the Alaska Goldpanners on July 25, he went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Ryan Dobson, Infielder, Humbolt Crabs (Far West League)
Dobson, a junior infielder from Culver City, Calif., played for the Humbolt Crabs of the Far West League in northern California. Starting 49 of the Crabs' 50 games, Dobson ranked sixth on the club with a .287 average and collected 52 hits, including six doubles, and scored 37 runs. He added 26 RBIs, 16 stolen bases and had a slugging percentage of .320.
Torin Goldstein, Infielder, Victoria Harborcats (West Coast League)
One of three Bulldogs to travel across the border to play in Canada for the Victoria Harborcats in Victoria, British Columbia, Goldstein appeared in 28 games in the infield collecting 10 hits, scored 11 runs and drove in seven RBIs. The redshirt sophomore from Irvine, Calif., hit a solo home run and notched two RBIs in a 7-4 loss at the Kitsap Blue Jackets on June 25.
Austin Guibor, Outfielder, Victoria Harborcats (West Coast League)
Joining Goldstein on the Harborcats this summer, the junior outfielder from Campebll, Calif., appeared in 45 games and hit .297 from the dish. He collected 41 hits, including 14 extra-base hits, scored 33 runs and drove in 26 RBIs. He ranked second on the team with nine doubles, and added one triple and four home runs. In a 21-10 win over the Wenatchee AppleSoxs on Aug. 2, Guibor had a season-best four hits, including a RBI single and an RBI double along with scoring two runs.
Dylan Lee, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Metro Collegiate League of Illinois)
Lee, a senior pitcher from Dinuba, Calif., joined Arruda and Brennon Williams as one of three Bulldogs playing this summer on the Crystal Lake Cardinals of the Metro Collegiate League of Illinois. Helping the Cardinals capture the North Division title, Lee appeared in seven game with three starts, while posting a 3.47 ERA in 23.1 innings and finished with a team-high 33 strikeouts. In a June 23 start against the Homestead Ranchers, Lee pitched six innings allowing four earned runs along with 11 strikeouts.
Jesse Medrano, Infielder, Humbolt Crabs (Far West League)
Medrano, a junior infielder from Concord, Calif., joined Dobson in the middle infield on the Crabs. Starting 48 of the Crabs' 49 games at second base, Medrano finished fifth on the team with a .291 average at the plate and ranked sixth on the team with nine doubles. On the season, he notched 55 hits, scored 40 runs, and drove in 31 RBIs, while adding two home runs and matched Dobson with 16 stolen bases.
Rickey Ramirez, Pitcher, Mankato Moondogs (Northwoods League)
Ramirez played this summer for the Mankato Moondogs (MN) of the Northwoods League. The sophomore pitcher from Marysville, Calif., appeared in 16 games making four starts posting a 1-1 record with a 3.22 ERA. He tossed 36.1 innings, notched 47 strikeouts and made three saves. He tossed a season-best eight strikeouts on July 3 in 3.2 innings limiting Rochester to four hits and one earned run. He earned a spot in the Northwoods League All-Star Game on July 21 pitching two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.
McCarthy Tatum, Outfielder, Anchorage Bucs (Alaska Baseball League)
Tatum also played this summer in Alaska helping lead the Anchorage Bucs to the Alaska Baseball League title. The sophomore infielder from Clovis appeared in 28 games collecting 15 hits, including two two doubles. He hit .190 from the plate, scored nine runs and drove in three RBIs. On July 26 in a 5-0 win over the Alaska Goldpanners, Tatum had a pair of hits, scored a run and swiped a bag. Tatum also earned a spot on the American Team in the Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game played on July 19 in Anchorage.
Ricky Thomas, Pitcher, YD Red Soxs (Cape Cod League)
Thomas pitched this summer for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Soxs (Mass.) in the Cape Cod League helping YD win their second consecutive Cape League Championship. Traditionally one of the top summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country, Thomas had a fantastic summer being named a Cape Cod League All-Star posting a 9-0 record in 10 appearances with a 0.92 ERA and 62 strikeouts. A league MVP candidate, Thomas went 7-0 in the regular season with a 1.01 ERA in 44.1 innings tossing 45 strikeouts. The sophomore from San Diego added two wins in the playoffs, including a win in the Championship series on Aug. 10 throwing 7.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and a season-high 10 strikeouts in a 9-3 win over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He added three other starts over the course of the year where he tossed six-plus innings without allowing a run and combined for 16 strikeouts in those outings.
Dominic Topoozian, Pitcher, Victoria Harborcats (West Coast League)
Joining a pair of teammates on the Harborcats this summer in Canada, Topoozian made 13 appearances on the mound making 11 starts. The senior hurler from Clovis posted a 6-4 record with a 2.81 ERA tossing a team-high 73.2 innings and recording a club-best 55 strikeouts. Named a West Coast League All-Star, Topoozian played in the WCL All-Star Game in Bellingham, Wash., on July 20 pitching one inning picking up a strikeout.
Kevin Viers, Infielder, Anchorage Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
Viers joined Batesole on the Anchorage Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League and had a strong summer leading the ABL with 21 RBIs. Appearing in 39 games for the Pilots, the senior first baseman hit .228 from the dish leading the team with 10 doubles. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native ranked second on the club with three triples and was third with 28 hits and 18 walks. Viers joined Tatum as an Alaska Baseball League All-Star selection and played in the ABL All-Star Game on July 19.
Nick Warren, Catcher, Anchorage Bucs (Alaska Baseball League)
Playing with fellow Bulldog McCarthy Tatum on the ABL Champion Anchorage Bucs, Warren played in 25 games notching seven hits, drove in four RBIs and scored three runs. The redshirt sophomore catcher from Saugus, Calif., started one game of the Championship series against the Matsu Miners on Aug. 4 smacking a RBI double.
Brennon Williams, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Metro Collegiate League of Illinois)
Joined by teammates Arruda and Lee on the Crystal Lake Cardinals of the Metro Collegiate League of Illinois, Williams made three appearances on the mound this summer for the North Divsion champions. The senior pitcher from Oakdale, Calif., made a pair of starts, including tossing a complete game on July 19 in a 5-1 win against the Oswego Cats. Williams pitched seven innings limiting the Cats to four hits, one earned run and tallied eight strikeouts. In his other start on June 16 against the Romeoville Royals, he tossed five innings allowing three hits, one earned run with two strikeouts.
