SAN JOSE, Calif. - After dropping the opening set at San Jose State on Tuesday evening, the Fresno State volleyball team rallied to defeat the Spartans in four sets to finish the season 15-14 overall and 6-12 in the Mountain West. The 'Dogs dropped the opening set 23-25 before winning the following three sets 25-20, 30-28, 25-19.
With the win over the Spartans, the 'Dogs clinched their third winning season in five years and finished tied for eighth in the MW with New Mexico. The 'Dogs ended the season with wins in three of their final five matches and on a two-match winning streak for the first time since 2012.
"To be able to finish the season on a winning streak and with a winning record is a great thing," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell who won her 120th match at Fresno State tonight. "I am proud of our team for responding after some tough close losses with better play at the end of the season. We are losing a few great young women in Aleisha Coates, Brooke Legaux and our All-MW libero Maggie Eppright, but we have the pieces returning and recruits coming in to do something really special next season"
"We have a lot of maturing and growth to do this spring, but we played some really mature teams in the conference, including a number of Top 100 teams in the RPI, closely. This spring we will have a very competitive environment and one that breeds leaders. I am excited to get it going, but we will enjoy this great win tonight," added Netherby-Sewell.
The 'Dogs finished with 50 kills as a team for their 12th match this season with 50-plus kills as sophomore Aubrey Folk led the team with 10 for her fifth match in double figures. Senior Aleisha Coates, junior Carly Scarbrough and sophomore Taylor Slover each had nine apiece as Slover went over the century mark for kills this season as she made it seven 'Dogs with 100-plus kills; a first for the 'Dogs since 2011.
Defensively, senior libero Maggie Eppright had her 25th career match with 20-plus digs finishing with 22 digs as the San Luis Obispo native finished fourth all-time in the Mountain West with 1,788 career digs. The 'Dogs had 11 team blocks for their ninth match of double-digit blocks as Folk had seven block assists and junior Lauren Torres added six.
An opening set that saw 12 tie scores and five lead changes, the 'Dogs led 10-7 in the early going before the teams went back-and-forth with the final tie being at 22. After a pair of points by the Spartans, Torres and Folk had a block assist to bring the Bulldogs back within one, but a service error by Eppright gave the Spartans the win.
The 'Dogs and Spartans again were in a tight battle in the second set deadlocked at 18 before the 'Dogs scored seven of the final nine points to win 25-20 scoring the final three points of the set. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-13 lead in the third set after back-to-back service aces by Madelyn Halteman forced a San Jose State timeout. After the 'Dogs continued to lead by four at 24-20, SJSU reeled off four straight points to tie the set at 24. With the set remaining locked at 28, a kill by Folk and an attack error by the Spartans gave the 'Dogs a 30-28 set win.
Fresno State jumped out to a 17-12 lead in the fourth set after an ace by Coates and a kill by Carly Scarbrough extended the lead to eight (22-14), the 'Dogs claimed the set 25-19 to pick up their first MW road win of the season.
