Fresno State allowed its second-highest point total of the season in Thursday night’s defeat.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's basketball team lost its first conference opener since the 2011-12 season as New Mexico left the Save Mart Center with an 80-54 win on Thursday night. The Lobos controlled the game in the paint, holding a 46-22 advantage in points in the paint, and a 49-29 edge on the glass.
New Mexico hit the ground running from the opening whistle, taking a 10-3 lead through opening four minutes and held a 22-13 at the end of the first. Graduate transfer Richelle van der Keijl set the tone for UNM with nine points in the opening 10 minutes as the Lobos shot 10-of-21 compared to Fresno State's 5-of-17. New Mexico outscored the Bulldogs by 14 points in the paint.
The second quarter saw the Lobo guards take over as accounted for 22 of their team's 25 points, as New Mexico extended its lead to 16 at the half. A 7-1 run for the road team pushed its lead to over where it stood for much of the game.
How It Happened: After Emilie Volk knocked down a 3-pointer midway through the second quarter, New Mexico countered with a 10-0 run during the ensuing two minutes. The Lobos went 4-of-4 from the field during the run to push its lead to 16.

Head Coach Jaime White
On her halftime speech…
"There is not much you can do but just play one possession at a time and get better. You have to just try to crawl back in it one possession at a time. The thing is, you have to stop the other team. I didn't feel that we were ready to go tonight. I felt like their post player took us out of it mentally, not even by doing anything. We just started trying to get around her or taking shots that are not necessary. Some early 3's would have helped, but those weren't falling. At the end of the day, it was just one of those games."
Emilie Volk, senior forward
On this performance going down as their conference opener…
"It's not great. It is not a way you want to start conference, especially at home with our fans. From a loss, you learn. I know that coach will bring us back in and I trust that we will respond well. It is a sour taste in our mouth, but we have to turn a new leaf."
Up Next: Fresno State heads to Nevada for a New Year's Eve game in Reno, Nev. Tipoff is scheduled for the 2 p.m. PT at Lawlor Events Center and will air live on the Mountain West Network.
