After sweeping the East Coast, breakfast burritos and free parking await for the Red Wave at Friday's home opener.
DURHAM, N.H. -Â The Fresno State volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 trip to the East Coast with a sweep over New Hampshire on Monday evening. The 'Dogs claimed the sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-23.
"We came and we conquered," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on the 'Dogs trip to the east. "I am so proud of our road warriors for pulling out four hard-fought wins in four days. I liked our tenacity when teams challenged us and the fact that we would step up and finish."
For the third time this season, Fresno State (4-0) was led in kills by Aleisha Coates who finished with 13 as the senior has posted double digit-kill performances in all four games. Madelyn Halteman posted a double-double with 30 assists and added a team-high 14 digs. Maggie Eppright chipped in 10 digs. The 'Dogs posted a .257 hitting percentage compared to .144 for New Hampshire (1-3).
"We have a lot to iron out before our tournament, but this trip allowed us to try things out and see our strengths and weaknesses," added Netherby-Sewell. "If we can serve and pass, we can really play. So that will drive our focus this week. Tonight, New Hampshire gave us a run for our money. They served really tough and pushed us back. We played much of the match out-of-system which was tough, but we found a way."
After initialing falling behind 5-2 to start set one, the 'Dogs were able to tie it up eight after back-to-back kills by Brielle Hefner, and extended it to 18-11 after a kill by Coates. The Wildcats were able to cut the Bulldogs lead to 21-18, but that would be as close as they would come as Lauren Torres blazed a ball past the UNH defense to claim the set.
The Bulldogs had an easier time in set two jumping out to a 10-7 lead and didn't look back going up by double digits (19-9) and cruised to a 25-13 win. Coates had five kills and the 'Dogs capitalized on a number of miscues for the Wildcats as UNH had eight attack errors.
The Wildcats were able to capture some momentum coming out of a short break to take a 19-14 lead in set three. Unfortunately, the 'Dogs were able to slow down the UNH attack from there reeling off four points to cut the lead to one and after back-to-back kills by Gertu Vider and Coates tied the match at 21. After two more tied scores, the Bulldogs claimed the final two points of the set as a kill by Coates completed the sweep.Â
"Aleisha did a lot of work for us this week and swung at a ton of balls," said Netherby-Sewell of the senior  who had 52 kills in four matches. "She was steady passing. Our defensive specialists also did a great job of making positive impacts. We have the middles and pins to win with and some depth on the bench, but we have to find consistency there. I really like this team and their willingness to work and play hard. We just have some growing to do."
Fresno State returns to action on Friday when they host the Bulldog Showdown at the Save Mart Center. The 'Dogs get the action started at 10:30 a.m. PT taking on Portland State (2-1). The Bulldogs will also play at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday squaring off against DePaul (1-2).
