Kristin Simonsen vaults from 59th and into a tie for 33rd behind final round 72 on Tuesday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With a final round even-par 72, sophomore Kristin Simonsen led the trio of Bulldog individuals who represented the Fresno State women's golf team at Colorado State's Ptarmigan Ram Classic, tying for 33rd after the two-day event concluded on Tuesday.
Â
"That was a solid finishing round by Kristin today," said head coach Emily Loftin. "It was great to see her find her rhythm on the course as the event went on. In all, each player showed some good signs that their game is moving in the right direction, but we definitely have some hard work ahead of us before we tee it up again in Missouri."
Â
A rocky start for Simonsen to open the third round was followed by shooting 2-under-par over the final 15 holes after two bogeys on the first three holes. Simonsen cupped birdies at the par-5 No. 5 and par-4 No. 7 during that 15-hole stretch to post her even-par score. The sophomore opened Monday with a first round 81 and answered with a second round 75 – Simonsen's final scorecard showed a 12-over-par 228.
Â
Kim, the Bulldogs' 36-hole leader, shot a final round 5-over-par 77 and Samantha Spencer carded a 9-over-par 81 to wrap up the tournament in Colorado. Kim placed tied for 42nd while Spencer was 79th.
Â
San Jose State's My Leander, who fired a 54-hole 6-under-par 210, was the event's medalist. The Spartans also took home the team title.      Â
Â
With three Bulldogs on the links, Fresno State did not compete as a team against the 15-team field that was present.
Â
Two missing pieces over the past two days, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Mimi Ho, will tee off 2016 World Amateur Team Championships on Wednesday in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Both will return to team action Oct. 3-4 at the Johnnie Imes Invitational, Fresno State's next event on the schedule.
