FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's soccer team won its Mountain West-best fifth-straight game after shutting out Montana 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field. The Bulldogs finished their non-conference schedule with a 5-3 record and their longest winning streak since 2008.
"We are thrilled that we have been on a good run," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We are confident and we are going to stay humble and keep doing the right things."
In the 28th minute, junior Peyton Cline was on the receiving end of passes from junior Myra Delgadillo and sophomore Alyssa Nishikawa to notch her second goal of the season. The assists were Delgadillo's fifth and Nishikawa's third this year.
Delgadillo now leads the Bulldogs with 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) this season and is tied with freshman Julia Glaser with a team-leading 24 shots. This was the third time this season that Delgadillo recorded four shots.
The Grizzlies (4-3-2) outshot the 'Dogs 16-9 and owned advantage in corner kicks 5-1, the lowest amounts for the Bulldogs this year, but Fresno State recorded its best on-goal percentage (.667) and was led defensively by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alex Best's six saves to earn its third shutout of the season.
"I felt like it was a game of two halves," Zwaschka said. "In the first half, we controlled a lot more and we dealt with the pressing well. In the second half, it became more of a fight and I was really proud with how we ended."
This marked Best's first collegiate shutout and second-straight win. She now has 10 saves and a 1.57 goals-against average in four appearances this year.
"I thought Alex was great to come on with such composure and go against a Montana team that we knew was going to try to hit us on different breaks," Zwaschka said. "She was alert and ready and was in the right positions when she needed to be."
The Bulldogs next head to Nevada on Friday to begin MW play followed by a trip to UNLV next Sunday. Fresno State's MW home opener is scheduled for Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. PT. against San Diego State, which will air live on 1600 AM ESPN Deportes and the Mountain West Network.
