Bulldogs fall in straight sets at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Despite a valiant comeback attempt in the second set, the Fresno State volleyball team fell at Wyoming on Saturday in straight sets. The Cowgirls claimed the sets 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 over the Bulldogs.
"We had a hard time acclimating today against Wyoming," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell after the contest. "Wyoming is tough to play at home with the elevation. We are generally pretty consistent offensively and we just could not find a rhythm today. We made a ton of unforced errors, but were able to make adjustments on them defensively that worked. Without our explosive offense though, we were unable to get anything working."
Fresno State (9-4, 0-2 MW) was held to a season-low .010 attack percentage along with a season-low 28 kills. Junior outside hitter Carly Scarbrough led the team with seven kills and had a .200 attack percentage. Aleisha Coates and Brielle Hefner added five kills apiece while Madelyn Halteman pitched in 18 of the 'Dogs 24 assists. Maggie Eppright had seven digs, Coates added six and the Bulldogs combined for seven blocks.
Wyoming (9-6, 2-0 MW) was led Kayla Slofkiss who tallied a double-double totaling 11 kills and 11 digs. Laura Beach added eight kills as the Cowgirls finished with 38 kills and a .228 attack percentage. Courtney Chacon had 31 assists and Madi Fields added a team-high 14 digs.
The 'Dogs got off to a slow start in set one falling behind 7-2, but back-to-back kills by Gertu Vider and Brooke Legaux brought the 'Dogs back within three closing the margin to 15-12. That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get as Wyoming scored 10 of the final 12 points of the set to take the set 25-14. Fresno State was held to a .000 hitting percentage with only eight kills in the set, while the Cowgirls countered hitting .312 with 14 kills.
The visitors were able to get off to a faster start in the second set taking a 5-3 lead after a kill by Coates, her first of the match. The Cowgirls responded with a 15-6 run to take a 18-11 lead before the 'Dogs battled back with six straight points to cut the deficit to one. A kill by Wyoming's Emily Lewis stopped the run, but the 'Dogs were able to tie the set at 20 on a kill by Lauren Torres and took a 22-21 advantage after an attack error by Slofkiss. Unfortunately, the 'Dogs were unable to continue the momentum as Wyoming claimed the final four points of the set to win 25-22.
A kill by the 'Dogs Taylor Slover started set three and three more kills by Scarbrough pushed the Bulldogs lead to 6-2, but Wyoming battled back to tie the set at 11 before three straight points gave them a lead they would not relinquish. The 'Dogs got within one (18-17), but five straight points for the Cowgirls locked up the sweep for Wyoming.
Eppright, Haile Watson and Jacqueline Hutcheson claimed the Fighting Spirit Award for the weekend as the attitude and effort from that trio was consistent despite facing adversity against both Colorado State and Wyoming.
The Bulldogs return home to host UNLV (13-1, 2-0 MW) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center. It will be both Greek Night and Clubs and Organizations Night as we spotlight some great groups who embody what it means to be a Bulldog!
