Bulldogs drop home opener to Sacramento State 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team fell to Sacramento State 4-3 Saturday evening in the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
"Sacramento State wanted the win more than we did today," said head coach Luke Shields. "This was not only a disappointing match for us, it was also a huge wake up call. We need to be match-tough going forward, we can't be timid."
In doubles, Euan McIntosh and Youssef Hassan played in No. 1 spot, Xander Veys and Mantas Bugailiskis played in the No. 2 spot and the duo of Jeremy Moser and Henrique Wojciecnowski Osorio played at the No. 3 spot.
Osorio and Moser were bested by the Hornet duo of Kasparas Zemaitelis and Christopher Clayton 6-1. Veys and Bugailiskis picked up the first doubles win of the match defeating Hermont Legaspi and Louis Chabut 7-5. McIntosh and Hassan defeated Mikus Losbergs and Dom Miller in a tie-breaker 6(7)-6 to lock in the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State went into singles with a 1-0 lead over Sacramento State. The Bulldogs singles lineup consisted of No. 1 Euan McIntosh, No. 2 Mantas Bugailiskis, No. 3 Youssef Hassan, No. 4 Xander Veys, No. 5 Jeremy Moser and No. 6 Bailey Gong.
McIntosh fell at the No. 1 position to Losbergs in a hard fought battle that was tied at multiple points throughout both sets (6-4, 6-4).
Bugailiskis was edged out at the No. 2 spot by Miller 6-4, 6-3. With that win the Hornets picked up their second point to earn a 2-1 advantage.
At the No. 3 spot, Hassan pulled out the Bulldogs first singles win over Zemaitelis in a tie-breaker 6-1, 6(7)-6.
The third Fresno State point was earned by Veys who defeated Legaspi at the No. 4 positions in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). The Bulldogs earned their second lead of the match at 3-2.
At the No. 6 spot, Gong was defeated by Donald Hall 6-0, 6-2.
Moser was the last Bulldog on the court in a three-set battle against Clayton at the No. 5 position. Moser came back from a one-set deficit to push the match into a third set. Moser eventually fell to Clayton (7-5, 3-6, 7-5) giving Sacramento State their fourth point to secure the win over Fresno State 4-3.
The Bulldogs will return home Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. PT to host the University of the Pacific. Â
