STOCKTON, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team finished the third day of the ITA Northwest Regionals. Zdenek Derkas was the last Bulldog standing in the tournament, he went on to win the consolation draw.
Â
"There were a lot of lessons to be learned this weekend," said head coach Luke Shields. "Your character is really defined by how you bounce back after a loss. We had a lot of guys get back out on the court after losing and pull out some good wins. I was really happy with Zdenek winning the consolation bracket. He showed great character after suffering a tough loss on the first day. I am most thrilled with how our guys are starting to dig deep and find ways to win. We've had some healthy growth collectively this fall."
Â
Derkas pulled off quite the comeback after losing his first match of the tournament in the round of 128, he won five straight matches to win the consolation draw. He defeated Martin Bats of Eastern Washington in the first round. 6-2, 6-3. He received a second round bye. In the third round, Derkas bested Alexis Alvarez of Washington in straight sets (7-5, 6-1). He defeated Santa Clara's Sebastian Mathieu 6-2, 6-2. He beat Ethan Young-Smith of Oregon in the quarterfinal round (6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(6)).
