SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team dropped its final Mountain West match on the road, against the regular season champion San Jose State 1-0, Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs had seven shots in the contest, all seven were on goal. Fresno State looks forward to competing in the 2017 MW Tournament as the No. 5 seed, next week.
"Obviously we want to win every game, but we had the opportunity to feel out the top team in the conference that we could potentially face in the tournament," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We had our chances in the match but we also had some lows. They had some lows as well but in the end they capitalized on one of their chances to get the 1-0 win today. We are already thinking about the tournament."
Kaitlyn Crooker, Carly Bracken, Anna Crawford, Julia Glaser, Alissa Pham, Marina Kerrache, Angie Weiner, Tori Nicolo, Sara Jo Ciapponi and Myra Delgadillo led the charge for the Bulldogs with Nicole Theroux in the box.
FIRST HALF – Both teams struggled to take control of the game in the first 45 minutes. Fresno State and San Jose State took three shots each. Theroux notched two saves to keep the Spartans scoreless. The San Jose State goalkeeper logged three saves to keep the match 0-0 going into the half. The impressive defensive effort by both teams only allowed for one corner kick in the half (San Jose State).
SECOND HALF – Fresno State and San Jose State came out in the second half trying to find their offensive flow. The Spartan goalkeeper made two diving saves to hold the 'Dogs scoreless midway through the second half.
The battle at midfield held both teams to single-digit scoring in the contest.
San Jose State went up 1-0 in the 81st minute when Lauola Amanoni took a running shot in the box, scoring over the goalies head. Kristen Amarikwa had the assist on the goal. Fresno State couldn't find the back of the net to tie the match before time expired.
On the match, San Jose State lead in corners (5-0) and saves (6-4). Both teams had seven shots.
For the Bulldogs, Bracken and Glaser both had two shots, both on goal.
WHAT'S NEXT – Fresno State will travel to Vegas to compete in the 2017 MW Tournament Oct. 31 - Nov. 4 as the No. 5 seed. Their opponent in the quarterfinals will be determined based on the result of the San Diego State and New Mexico game, to be played later this evening.
