Bulldogs finish Texas road trip on Saturday at Texas State.
ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite outscoring UT Arlington during the second half, Fresno State came up short in its first of two games in Texas, falling 67-54 to the Mavericks at College Park Center on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Aly Gamez who posted a season-high 12 points, four rebounds and four steals in 19 minutes while playing in her home state. Also in double figures was freshman Maddi Utti who had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Candice White 10 points. UTA was led by seniors Rebekah VanDijk (19) and Crystal Allen (15).
How It Happened
Fresno State went down 4-0 early, but a 10-3 run highlighted by a pair of 3's from Breanne Knishka gave the 'Dogs a 10-7 advantage less than four minutes into the game. The Bulldogs then were unable to get a bucket to fall, missing 10 straight shots as UTA capitalized with an 18-2 run during the ensuing eight minutes to take a 25-12 lead.
Jordanna Porter ended the drought and the 'Dogs hit a 7-2 spurt sparked by Gamez. The freshman converted an and-one with just over five minutes to play to pull Fresno State with four at 28-24, forcing UTA to call a timeout. From that point the Bulldogs missed their next seven shots as the Mavericks closed the half hitting their last five to take a 41-25 lead at the break.
With 5:24 on the clock in the third quarter, Bree Delaney knocked down a 3, stole the inbound pass and scored on a layup. The quick five points started a 12-5 stretch for the Bulldogs as they pulled within 11 at the end of the third quarter as Gamez dropped in a 3 at the buzzer.
Three minutes into the fourth, Fresno State pulled to within seven with a 6-0 spurt but that was as close as they would get. The Bulldogs would go 1-of-8 during the next six minutes as UTA would take go on a 10-2.
