Taking what's FREE
Somewhat of a lost art in today's game, the free throw line has become a spot of consistency for Candice White. After putting together free throw streaks of 15, 16 and 18 during the 2016-17 season, Candice White has gone above and beyond those marks to open this season, more than doubling her previous-best streak. As of Dec. 13, the junior has strung together 39 made attempts. With six makes to end last season her streak of 45 ranks 15th all-time in Division I history.
Â
? White stands alone atop the nation's free-throw percentage leaderboard (100%).
? White was 18-of-18 through five games last year, missing her first attempt on Nov. 30, 2016. Her 18 consecutive free throws were the most on record to start a season by a Bulldog dating back to the 1983-84 season. Records are not available prior to the 1983-84 season.
? Dating back to last season, White has made 45 straight free throws.
Delaney's record night
Against Pacific on Dec. 7, Bree Delaney scored a freshman record 28 points. She finished 7-of-12 from the field (6-8 3-pt FG) and 8-of-10 from the free throw line to lead the Bulldogs to an 81-70 victory over Pacific.
Â
? Delaney's 28 points was four better than Jaleesa Ross and Kellie Murphy-Attebery who previously held the freshman record.
White shoots and swipes
Not only has Candice White knocked down her last 45 free throws dating back to 2016-17, the junior is also near the top of the Mountain West in steals, ranking fourth with 2.1 steals per game.
• White has increased her average steals per game from last season by 0.4 from 1.5 to 1.9.
Utti shines in starting role
Thrust into a larger role after three games into the season, freshman Maddi Utti has thrived as a starter. Receiving increased minutes in game four, the Seaside, Oregon native has started each game since, posting double-figure scoring performances in the five games since, which has included a pair of double-doubles. While her numbers jumped to 13.4 points and 8.0 rebounds, Utti's efficient shooting has been key for the 'Dogs as she has converted at a 68.2 percent clip from the field (30-of-44) during those five games. Dating back to the fourth game of the season, Utti has strung together six straight double-digit scoring games, the most by a freshman since Jaleesa Ross had 13 in 2008.
Â
? Utti has logged two double-doubles in the last five games (12 points & 10 rebounds at Texas State and 12 points & 10 rebounds versus Pacific. Prior to this season, there were 17 double-doubles by freshman in Bulldog history
? She is the first freshman to score double figures in six straight games since Jaleesa Ross in 2008. The program's all-time leading scorer posted a stretch of 13 straight games in double digits during the 2007-08 season.
Unquestioned leader
In her third season at Fresno State, and second as a starter, Candice White has become the unquestioned leader for the Bulldogs through her work ethic and production on the court. Whether it's been calmly sinking one free throw after another or exploding for double-digit points in a quarter, White has been the engine that has helped Fresno State run this season. As of Dec. 13, the junior is averaging 17.7 points per game (second in the MW) and is the only Bulldog to score double figures in all nine games this year.
Â
? In 2016-17, White's 489 points scored was the 10th-most in a single season at Fresno State. She is currently on pace to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career this season.
? In the Bulldogs' game at CSUN on Dec. 2, White poured in a career-high 34 points, the first 30-point game for a 'Dog since Raven Fox scored 31 at San Diego on Nov. 28, 2014. The total was two shy of the program record for points in a game.
? White is currently the only player in the NCAA to be perfect from the free-throw line (39-of-39).
? Nationally, White finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 15 in free throw percentage in the NCAA at 87.7 percent (100-of-114) and No. 37 in 3-point percentage at 40.1 (69-of-172), and is 11th and 24th, respectively, among returners. The 87.7 percent was the highest free-throw percentage in a single season at Fresno State.
Mix and match
Due to the youth on this year's team, sticking with one consistent lineup was going to take time. Throw in injuries and lineup changes have become a very common occurrence for the 'Dogs this season. In six of nine games, Fresno State has trotted out a new-look starting five.
