‘Dogs drop MW opener at Nevada

Nevada controls the paint, outscores Fresno State 52-22 inside.
RENO, Nev. – After holding a three-point lead after the opening quarter, Fresno State was unable to find an answer for Nevada's post play as the Wolf Pack totaled 52 points in the paint en route to a 90-73 defeat of the Bulldogs on Thursday evening at the Lawlor Events Center. It was the second straight year that Fresno State has drop its conference opener.
Candice White was a bright spot on a tough night for the Bulldogs as the junior finished with 24 points and a career-high seven assists. Breanne Knishka added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Two of Nevad's three primary post players finished with double-doubles, led by Teige Zeller who posted 20 points and 12 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State came out quick behind a 7-0 stretch in less than two minutes before Nevada fought back with a 6-0 run of their own. The Bulldogs led for all but just over a minute in the quarter behind a 12-point and two-assist period from White as the 'Dogs held a three-point edge after one.
Nevada began going inside to start the second, taking its first lead of the game with an 8-2 spurt with all four field goals coming around the basket. Back-and-forth, Fresno State regained the lead with 3:13 in the period after White scored five of her 20 first-half points on back-to-back jumpers. The Wolf Pack though had an answer, ending the half on a 9-3 run to take a 43-38 lead into the break.
Nevada built its lead up 13 midway through the third quarter through the paint scoring eight points close to the basket during a 10-2 Nevada run. As the Bulldogs attempted to cut into the deficit, pulling within nine with under five minutes on the clock, the Wolf Pack struck again, this time scoring nine straight points at the free throw line to take a 65-47 lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Nevada finished the third period 12-of-14 from the line, and held a 70-55 advantage.
The Bulldogs managed to only get their deficit down to the 13 in the fourth quarter as the Wolf Pack continued to go inside, scoring seven of its nine field goals within the paint.
TEAM NOTES
- Fresno State was outrebounded 50-35 overall and 20-9 on the offensive glass.
- Fresno State was outscored 24-5 in points off turnovers and 21-9 in second chance points.
- The 90 pointers were the most Fresno State has allowed in a game since giving up 92 to Washington State on November 22, 2013.
- The loss snapped the Bulldogs' nine-game winning streak versus Nevada.

- Finished 4-of-5 from 3, tying her career-high for made 3's in a game.
