FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior pitcher Rickey Ramirez was of 59 pitchers nationally named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, the association announced Monday.
The award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as Ramirez was one of only two Mountain West relievers to be selected joining Nevada's Evan McMahan. It is the second straight year the 'Dogs have had a pitcher named to the Watch List as since-graduated Tim Borst joined McMahan on the initial Watch List in 2016.
As a sophomore in 2016, Ramirez earned Second-Team All-Mountain West honors posting a 4-1 record with a 4.54 ERA while making 26 appearances, including one start. He threw 39.2 innings notching 42 strikeouts and held opponents to a .271 batting average while picking up four saves. In Mountain West play, he made 12 appearances tossing 20.0 innings allowing only one earned run, 12 hits and struck out 20 holding opponents to a .182 average.
The Marysville, Calif., native enters his third season at Fresno State with 41 career appearances on the mound. As a freshman in 2015, he went 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in 16.1 innings before breaking out as a sophomore.Â
The 2017 Stopper of the Year Watch List will be updated with a mid-season release on April 26, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released on June 7, prior to the start of NCAA Super Regional competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced at the 2017 College World Series on June 17.
Ramirez and the Bulldogs officially open the 2017 season on Friday evening against Pac-12 foe Oregon with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. The `Dogs four-game series against the Ducks is part of an 11-game homestand that starts 2017.
