FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Bulldog baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with Pac-12 foe Oregon winning game one 8-3 before falling in game two 13-1 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (2-1) took game one behind a strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Rickey Ramirez, who made only his second start in his 42nd career appearance as a Bulldog. The Marysville, Calif., native tossed a career-high six innings allowing only four hits, three earned runs and notched a career-best six strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
"I thought Rickey was outstanding today," said head coach Mike Batesole on the Bulldog junior. "He made some big pitches in the clutch when he had to and got into a little bit of a mess in the fifth inning, but was able to get out of it and go another inning afterwards."
Much like Saturday night's opener, the 'Dogs again supplied their starting pitcher some early offense getting on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by senior third baseman Jesse Medrano. Oregon (1-2) answered back with three runs in the top of the third thanks to a three-run home run by right fielder Slade Heggen, but the Bulldogs responded with a three-run frame of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Junior catcher Nick Warren led off the frame reaching base on an Oregon error, one of six in the game for the Ducks, and came around to score on a single to right center by Scott Silva. Senior right fielder Austin Guibor had one of his two hits in the game with a two-run RBI single up the middle bringing home Silva and Ryan Dobson to put the 'Dogs up 4-3.
After working around a pair of hits in the fifth, Ramirez worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning before giving way to freshman right-hander Ryan Jensen in the seventh inning. The Salinas native allowed a pair of Ducks on base, but stranded them at the corners. Fresno State added four insurance runs in the bottom of the frame as Silva, Guibor, Aaron Arruda and Medrano each drove in an RBI apiece.
Senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian came on to close out the contest for the 'Dogs making his first appearance for the Bulldogs since May 16, 2015 after redshirting last season. The Clovis native tossed the final two innings allowing only two hits and struck out three.
"It was so great to see Dom get back out there since today was his first time pitching since Tommy John surgery and that is really special for his to go out there and have some success," added Batesole on seeing Topoozian back in action for the first time in over 21 months. "He loves to compete and that was special for me to see him do that."
The backend of the twin bill was not as kind to the Bulldogs despite scoring the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI double down the left field line by Arruda. It was all the visitors from there as junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz shut down Oregon for the first three innings, but the Ducks exploded for three runs in the fourth inning and tacked on one more in the fifth and sixth before adding four runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth.
The 'Dogs were limited to only six hits in the contest, including none after the fifth inning, as Guibor and Arruda each had a pair of hits and senior outfielder Jake Stone and catcher Carter Bins each had a single.
Schlichtholz, who was limited to only two innings of work in three appearance in 2016, matched his career-high throwing four innings allowing four hits, three earned runs and added a strikeout. Kenny Varnell, Mark Reece, Adam Medrano, Isaiah Davis and Guibor each appeared on the mound as Medrano and Davis made their Bulldog debuts and Guibor pitched in his first collegiate game.
The Bulldogs and Ducks conclude their four-game series on Monday evening at 6:05 p.m. with a special Night to Remember. The 'Dogs will sport retro Fresno Athletic Club jerseys and will honor Fresno's Japanese-American history by bringing back Fresno State athletics legend Fibber Hirayama.
