FRESNO, Calif. - Despite a late-game offensive surge, the Fresno State baseball team fell 6-4 to UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
For a second straight game, the 'Dogs got a stellar starting pitching performance as junior Rickey Ramirez tossed a career-best eight innings and struck out a career-high 11 batters. The right-hander from Marysville, Calif., threw 118 pitches on the afternoon allowing seven hits and five earned runs while only allowing two walks.
"Rickey was throwing his heart out today. His performance was one of the best you will ever see him do. We have got to get better offensively, and we have to do it fast or we will have to get some changes in the lineup," said head coach Mike Batesole postgame.
Outhitting their opponent for the fourth time in six games, the 'Dogs totaled eight hits compared to seven hits for UC Riverside (4-1). Leading the way from the plate was senior right fielder Austin Guibor who had his fourth multi-hit game of the season with a single and a triple and added an RBI and run scored. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda also had a pair of hits, including his second home run of the season, while Jake Stone, Scott Silva and Korby Batesole each had extra-base hits.
After retiring the first nine Highlanders in order, Ramirez ran into trouble in the fourth inning allowing five runs as UCR platted one apiece on three RBI singles and added two more runs on a RBI single through the left side by catcher Casey Worden to make it 5-0 for the visitors.Â
The 'Dogs, who were only able to scrap together three hits in the first five innings off UCR starter Hazahel Quijada, found their offensive groove in the sixth inning as Silva led off with his fourth double of the season spraying the ball down the left field line. Guibor followed with his 10th career triple driving home Silva for the Bulldogs' first run and Arruda followed with a two-run shot to left center to cut the score to 5-3. Stone continued the hot hitting with a double to right center and moved to third on an UCR error before coming home to score on an RBI groundout by Jesse Medrano.
Unfortunately, the 'Dogs were only able to get three more baserunners aboard the remainder of the game as the Highlanders added an insurance run in the ninth and Ryan Lillie closed out his second save in as many days.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. as it will be Salute to Services as all military and veterans get into the game for free along with being 90's Night to wrap up Decades Weekend.
