Senior Annemarie Schwanz captured the second Mountain West crown of her career on Saturday after as the Bulldogs finished with a program best 54 points at the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After finishing third last year in the mile at the Mountain West Indoor Championships, Annemarie Schwanz returned this year for her final opportunity and captured the elusive title on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Along with a two other individual champions, the trio helped Fresno State earn its highest finish at the MW Indoor Championships as the team took sixth with 54 points.
"I'm very proud of our group of 14 student-athletes," head coach Scott Winsor said. "We wanted to see heart, competitiveness and toughness, and we saw all three this weekend. We scored the most amount of points that we've ever scored in the conference meet. With three of our top athletes out, I couldn't be more proud of the group we brought. Our future looks bright and our girls are excited about the direction we're headed in. We'll hit recruiting hard during the next month because if we can add to the talent what we already have, we'll be in great shape next year."
The Bulldogs entered the final day in second with 28 points behind an individual crown from Jestena Mattson (pentathlon) on Thursday, and a one-two finish in the weight throw from Tiffany Gilmore and Aisiah Tuiasosopo on Friday. The 'Dogs opened Saturday with three points from the shot put and high jump. Gilmore added two points to the team total with a seventh-place finish on a throw of 14.07m (46'-2"). Savannah Miller provided another point as she tied for seventh in the high jump at height of 1.63m (5'-4.25").
Schwanz then opened the running events up with a huge 10 points for the team total in the mile. The senior stuck with the lead pack throughout, leading at times before pulling away from the pack with Air Force's Carina Gillespie. Trailing with 200 meters to go, Schwanz made her push around the final turn to out-kick the Falcon to and close the race with a final lap of 30.3 seconds. The senior's time of 4:48.98 was just off of her school-record pace from 2016. It was Fresno State's first MW championship in the mile. Factoring in altitude, her time of 4:48.98 converts to a school-record mark of 4:42.68, breaking her previous record by 4.45 seconds.
Like they did in the prelims, Maja Pogorevc and Nailah Harris-Murillo finished in the same spot in the finals, claiming third and fifth, respectively. Trailing midway through the second lap in the first heat, Pogorevc made her move around the final turn and slipped into first just before crossing the finish line with a personal best (54.59).
Harris-Murillo took third in heat two, also clocking a new personal record at 54.91. The junior also earned another point for the Bulldogs in the 200 meters as she placed eighth, lowering per previous best to 24.35.
Fresno State's final points came in the 4x400 relay where the 'Dogs team of Pogorevc, Murillo-Harris, Mattson and Tiera Norman finished seventh.
