Fresno State tied for the lowest seed (No. 7) to ever reach the Mountain West Championship game.
LAS VEGAS – With little left in the tank after playing four games in five days in Las Vegas, and five in eight days including last week's contest at UNLV, Fresno State faded late against fourth-seeded Boise, falling 66-53 in the 2017 Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship game at the Thomas & Mack Center on Friday afternoon.
Candice White led the Bulldogs on the day with 14 points, while Bego Faz Davalos notched her 21st double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Kendra Martin also chipped in one of the best games of her career with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Fresno State came out firing, knocking down three 3's within the opening three minutes, with two from White, but those ended up being the only 3-pointers of the afternoon for the Bulldogs. The 'Dogs built their lead up to six with a lay-up from Emilie Volk with 6:01 on the clock,
Â
Trailing 20-17 early in the second after a pair of free throws from Kendra Martin, Marta Hermida and Shalen Shaw dropped in a 3-pointers to quickly extend the Bulldogs' deficit to nine. The 'Dogs managed cut to the Broncos lead to six during the ensuing minutes, and Martin scored the final four points of the half to pull Fresno State within two at the half at 30-28.Â
Â
Boise State came out of the half on a 9-2 run as the 'Dogs made just one of its first seven shots, and built its lead up to 12 midway through the quarter. The 'Dogs, though, closed the quarter on a 6-0 spurt and opened the fourth with a pair of free throws from Zaria Branch as Fresno State pulled to 48-44.
Â
While the lead was slim, Tournament MVP Brooke Pahukoa scored 10 of her game-high 17 points during the final quarter as Boise State outscored Fresno State 18-11 over the final 10 minutes.
Â
How It Happened: With 4:35 remaining in the game, Candice White pulled the 'Dogs within five on a lay-up, but Rodriguez came back and nailed 3 at the top of the key to put the game out of reach before Pahukoa went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Â
Notes:
•  Bego Faz Davalos was selected to the All-Tournament Team along side Brooke Pahukoa (MVP), Yaiza Rodriguez, Elin Gustavsson, Dezz Ramos and Brooke Johnson.
• Faz Davalos set numerous records in today's game. With 11 points and 14 rebounds, Faz Davalos registered her 21st double-double of the season, a Mountain West record, passing UNLV's Linda Froelich (1999-2000).
• Faz Davalos also had four blocks, giving her 346 for her career. Her 346 career blocks are a Mountain West record, surpassing the previous mark of 344 blocks by New Mexico's Jordan Adams (1999-03).
• For the tournament, Faz Davalos had 16 blocks, breaking the previous single tournament record of 13 by New Mexico's Porche Torrance in 2012.
• Fresno State is now 12-3 all-time in the Mountain West tournament, and 2-2 in the Mountain West Championship game.
