Arruda's three-run home run powers 'Dogs over Dons, 6-3

SAN FRANCISCO - Behind a three-run home run by junior first baseman Aaron Arruda and a great relief appearance by junior pitcher Fred Schlichtholz, the Fresno State baseball team defeated the University of San Francisco 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
Fresno State (9-6), who won its seventh game in its last nine outings, outhit their opponent for the 13th time this season finishing with eight hits while holding San Francisco (10-7) to seven hits. Freshman catcher Carter Bins had his second straight game with three hits and added an RBI, while Arruda went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the second with a single by Arruda to left field and was followed with a single by Jake Stone through the left side that put a pair of runners on board. After Jesse Medrano went down on strikes, sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford moved Arruda to third with a fielder's choice before scoring on an RBI single to right field by Bins.
The scoring continued in the third inning as Austin Guibor and Scott Silva drew leadoff walks off USF relief pitcher Grant Young before Arruda followed with a three-run home run to left field to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-0. It was Arruda's third home run of the season and 15th of his career as he now has a team-leading 18 RBIs.
San Francisco was able to answer back with two runs in the bottom of the inning off Schlichtholz as Harrison Bruce and Matt Sinatro led off with singles and a walk to Nico Giarratano loaded the bases. An RBI single by Allen Smoot got the Dons on the board and USF added a second run on an RBI groundout by Ross Puskarich.
Schlichtholz settled down after that tossing three scoreless innings limiting the Dons to one baserunner. The Bulldogs made it 5-2 in the sixth on an RBI single by Korby Batesole to center field platting Medrano. The Dons cut the Bulldogs lead to two as Tyler Villaroman scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, but the 'Dogs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a double to left center by Jared Akins drove in Guibor from second.
Freshman Adam Medrano made his second start of the season working a scoreless first two innings before giving way to Schlichtholz, who picked up his first win of the season tossing four innings and added six strikeouts. It is the junior from Coronado, Calif., second career win and first since April 23, 2014 in a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton.
Ryan Jensen and Dominic Topoozian each worked an inning without giving up a hit and sophomore Edgar Gonzalez came on in the ninth to convert his third save of the season as he struck out a pair of Dons.
The 'Dogs are back in action on Friday afternoon as they travel to Air Force (8-9, 0-6 MW) for their Mountain West road opener at 2 p.m. PT. All three games of the weekend series will air live on the Mountain West Network.
