The Fresno State baseball team topped Pepperdine 5-2 on Wednesday evening as six Bulldogs pitchers limited the Waves to three hits.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied from an early two-run deficit to defeat Pepperdine 5-2 on Wednesday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. Six Bulldog pitchers combined to limit the Waves to three hits in the contest.
Fresno State (12-8) was held to only five hits in the contest as sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford was the lone 'Dog with multiple hits as he tallied his seventh multi-hit game of the season with two hits and added two RBIs, two walks and stole a base. Senior outfielder Jake Stone extended his on-base streak to 32 games as he picked up an eighth-inning single, drew three walks and scored two runs from the seven-hole. Jared Akins and Carter Bins had the 'Dogs other two hits as the Bulldogs were held without an extra-base knock.
Pepperdine (10-9) was held to three hits by the Bulldog pitching staff with two going for extra bases as first baseman Ben Rodriguez had a double and second baseman Chase Lambert hit a solo home run.
The Waves got the scoring started in the top of the third with a leadoff home run to left center by Lambert off Bulldog starting pitcher Adam Medrano. After consecutive hit by pitches, junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz came on in relief to strike out the side before Pepperdine added to their lead in the fourth with an RBI single to right field by leftfielder Josh Davis.
With Pepperdine starting pitcher Jonathan Pendergast exiting the game after four innings, limiting the 'Dogs to one hit while striking out five, the 'Dogs were able to get Wave relief pitcher Austin Gehle in the fifth for a pair of runs capitalizing on a Pepperdine error. Stone led off with a single and moved to second after an error by the Wave shortstop off the bat of Carter Bins. A walk to sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford loaded the bases for Scott Silva who hit into a fielder's choice to drive in Stone. Akins tied the score at 2-2 with an RBI single through the right side to score Bins from third.
The 'Dogs took the lead in the sixth inning scoring the eventual game-winning run taking advantage of a pair of Pepperdine blunders as Austin Guibor came in to score on a passed ball that escaped Wave catcher Joe Caparis. Guibor, who led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Medrano and advanced third on a throwing error by Wave pitcher Benjamin Slattery.
Fresno State added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-out single back up the middle by Ashford drove in Stone and Bins as the pair got on base with a single and walk, respectively as Korby Batesole moved them over with his team-leading seventh sacrifice bunt.
The run support was enough for the 'Dogs pitching staff who was superb in the game as six pitchers combined to limit the Waves to three hits. Junior JJ Santa Cruz picked up his second win of the season as he pitched a flawless sixth and seventh inning. Senior Dominic Topozzian and freshman Ryan Jensen each threw a hitless inning and sophomore Edgar Gonzalez came on in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday at 6:05 p.m. when they host San Diego State (14-7, 4-2 MW) for Heroes Night as we welcome some or our local heroes here in the Central Valley!

On the bullpen…
"We got exactly what we needed. Like I've been saying all year, [our pitchers] have outstanding arms, and when we can throw it over the white, we are really, really good. When Fred Schlichtholz came in, we were able to really pound the zone. He changed the tone and the whole feel of the entire night."
Â
On today's at-bats…
"You have to do a lot of things right to beat a team like Pepperdine. We took some better at bats today. We took some walks and got some really good swings off. We were able to get some bunts down that were clutch and led to some good RBIs."
Â
On this weekend's series vs. San Diego State...
"It's going to be on this weekend. [SD and FS] have had some great battles. They're physical, they're strong and they're very talented. They have a chip on their shoulder from not having the year they wanted last year, so we know they are going to come out hot and firing this year."
