The Dogs and Aztecs wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team dropped a pair of games to San Diego State on Saturday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. The 'Dogs fell 5-4 in game one of their doubleheader with the Aztecs before dropping game two 12-0.
Game 1 Highlights
Fresno State (12-10, 4-4 MW) had nine hits in game one as senior center fielder Jake Stone went 2-for-3 with a double, sacrifice bunt and scored a run for his third multi-hit game of the season. Freshman catcher Carter Bins added two hits and an RBI.
The 'Dogs fell behind 1-0 in the second inning as San Diego State (16-7, 6-2 MW) scored a run off a leadoff walk. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead as junior first baseman Aaron Arruda led off with a walk and Stone followed with a single through the right side to put runners at the corners for Jesse Medrano. The senior third baseman grounded out to shortstop to drive in Arruda and Bins followed with a single through the right side that platted Stone. An RBI single up the middle by senior designated hitter Scott Silva gave the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead going into the sixth.
Bulldog starting pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas breezed through the first five innings allowing only one run and four hits, but the Aztecs cut the deficit to one in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to left center by center fielder Chase Calabuig. Thomas was able to strikeout third baseman Andrew Brown, one of his four in the game, to limit the damage.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle by Medrano, one of his two RBIs in the contest, but the lead did not last long as SDSU scored a pair off relief pitcher Ryan Jensen in the seventh.
A leadoff double down the left field line by SDSU's second baseman Alan Trejo in the eighth proved to be turning point as Trejo came around to score what turned out to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Danny Sheehan as the Aztecs took a 5-4 lead and only one Bulldog was able to get a hit in the final two innings.
Thomas took his third no-decision of the season tossing six innings allowing seven hits, two runs and three walks with four strikeouts. Jensen was followed by junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz, who suffered his second loss of the season throwing the final 2.1 innings and had a strikeout.
Game 2 Highlights
The 'Dogs were held to one hit in game two as Aztec starting pitcher Brett Seeburger was nearly flawless tossing eight scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out seven without allowing a walk. The lone hit for the Bulldogs came in the bottom of the fifth as senior Jesse Medrano beat out an infield single before stealing second base, but was stranded there. It was the lone baserunner of the game for the Bulldogs as SDSU scored 12 runs and collected 16 hits in a rout of the 'Dogs.
SDSU wasted little time getting on the board scoring five runs in the second, added two more in the third and one more in the fourth to take a quick 8-0 lead scoring seven earned runs off Bulldog starting pitcher Rickey Ramirez who matched his career-high in runs allowed, earned runs allowed and hits allowed.
The Aztecs added four more runs in the eighth off Bulldog reliever Adam Medrano, including a three-run home run by first baseman Jordan Verdon.
The 'Dogs and Aztecs wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. as it is High School Night as all high school students get into the game for free as well as Salute to Sunday as all military and veterans get into the game for free.
