'Dogs walk-off with a 8-7 win over San Diego State

FRESNO, Calif. - With its first walk-off victory since May 7, 2016, the Fresno State baseball team rallied for a three-run bottom of the ninth to walk-off with a 8-7 victory over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
"You are going to have all kinds of ups and downs in a season," said head coach Mike Batesole. "You're going to lose five in a row at some points and you're going to win five in a row at some points. But what do you have to do every time? You fight. Whether you're playing great or not playing great, you fight. And that's what you saw out of these guys today. I was very proud of the seniors today that were at the top of the lineup. I told them to go get it – if you want to win, then you have to go get it."
Fresno State (13-10, 5-4 MW) snapped a two-game skid to pick up the series finale as the Bulldogs ended San Diego State's (16-8, 6-3 MW) five-game winning streak.
The 'Dogs were led by four of their seniors at the top of the order as Jesse Medrano, Austin Guibor, Scott Silva and Jake Stone combined for seven of the 'Dogs 12 hits. Medrano had a season-high three hits, including a double and scored two runs. Silva added two hits, including his third home run of the season and drove in two RBIs. Stone added a single and scored the game-winning run.
Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda, hitting in the five-hole, smacked his team-leading fourth home run of the season with a three-run shot in the first inning. Freshman catcher Carter Bins added his second home run of the season in the eighth inning.
The Aztecs wasted little time jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of first using four doubles and five hits off Bulldog starting pitcher JJ Santa Cruz. SDSU scored its first run after a Bulldog error allowed leadoff batter Alan Trejo to score from second. Shortstop Danny Sheehan followed with an RBI double to left center and first baseman Jordan Verdon followed with an double to right center to score Sheehan. The final run of the frame was scored by the Aztecs on an RBI single by left fielder Tyler Adkison.
The Bulldogs promptly responded with singles by Medrano and Guibor to led off the frame, Arruda followed two batters later with a bomb to left field to cut SDSU's lead to 4-3.
Silva led off with a solo home run to start the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4 as the 'Dogs continued to fight their way back.
San Diego State bounced back to take a one-run lead in the top of the seventh scoring on a wild pitch, but the 'Dogs continued to fight as Bins' two-out solo home run to left field in the eighth tied the game for the second time.
The tie was short-lived as the Aztecs picked up two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run RBI single up the middle by center fielder Julian Escobedo to give SDSU a 7-5 lead.
Continuing to fight until the final out and with the top of the lineup due up in the bottom of the ninth, the 'Dogs refused to go down as Medrano led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the right field line. Silva followed with a one-out single to left field to drive in Medrano and make it a one-run game. Senior Ryan Dobson, pinch-running for Silva, came around to tie the game at 7-7 on an error by the Aztec shortstop allowed Arruda to get on base.Â
With Stone, who reached base on a single, at third and Arruda at first with one out, junior outfielder Jared Akins came to the plate and bounced into a fielder's choice as Stone beat the Aztecs third baseman's throw home to give the 'Dogs the walk-off win.
Junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz picked up his second win of the season getting the final two outs of the ninth. Sophomore Edgar Gonzalez went 3.1 innings exiting the game with one out in the ninth, while senior Dominic Topozzian and freshman Davis Moore each threw two scoreless innings.Â
The 'Dogs return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Cal Poly (8-15) at 6:05 p.m. for Greek Night.
