Hopkins wins two at Mondo Team Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Behind wins in the discus and shot put from Kayla Hopkins, the Fresno State women's track and field team finished third at the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday at Hornet Stadium. The women finished the day with 91 points while the men's team took fourth with 67 points. In total, the 'Dogs grabbed seven first-place finishes in the meet.
After narrowly missing a new personal record as she won the shot put with a mark of 47-4.25 (14.43m), Hopkins did not miss later in the day in the discus. The junior came up with a toss of 181-3 (55.25m) which ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 8 in the NCAA this season. The mark also ranks second in Fresno State history passing Katie Richardson's 2007 throw of 178-6 (54.40m).
Vanja Spaic added to the throwers' win total in the javelin with a mark of 150-9 (55.25m). It was the sophomore's second win in as many meets this season for her.
Outside of the throws, the Bulldogs' fourth win of the day in the field came from Savannah Miller. The junior won the high jump at a height of 5-5.25 (1.66m).
On the track, Maja Pogorevc lowered her personal best in the 400 meters by more than three seconds, clocking a time of 54.30 en route to winning the event. For the men, Esteban Vega won the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.88, while Joel Gonzalez earned the win in the steeplechase in a personal-record time of 9:33.83. The Bulldogs finished 1-3 in both events.
Fresno State will travel to Waco, Texas next weekend for the Baylor Invitational on April 8.
