Schwanz sets 800-meter school record at Bryan Clay Invitational

Hopkins leaves Bryan Clay Invitational with fifth discus win of the season.
AZUSA, Calif. – In her second race of the spring, Annemarie Schwanz broke her second record of the season, lowering Shannon Lieder's 25-year-old school record in the 800 meters on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Clocking a time of 2:04.65, the senior topped the previous mark by more than two seconds as she finished first among all collegians and second in the 145-athlete field.

For the fifth time in as many meets, Kayla Hopkins won the discus, besting a field of 52 athletes with a throw of 167-5 (51.02m). Finishing behind her was teammate Yazmin Torres who crossed the 50-meter mark for the first time in her career. The junior's fourth throw of the event registered a distance of 50.82 meters (166-9), moving her to eighth in program history. Aisiah Tuiasosopo narrowly missed the finals as the junior finished 10th with a throw of 146-5 (44.63m).

Torres posted her second top-10 finish of the meet in the shot put, finishing ninth with a mark of 44-1.25 (13.44m).

Sophomore Vanja Spaic moved up to ninth in Fresno State's history in the javelin on Friday with a mark of 160-4 (48.86m). Finishing second among 35 competitors, she landed her best throw of the day on her final attempt of the competition.

Nailah Harris-Murillo placed 10th among collegiate athletes, and 14th overall in a field of 129 runners, in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 24.37, her second-fastest time of the season. Recording his top time of the season, Esteban Vega finished 15th in the 800 meters among a field of 131 athletes with a mark of 1:51.23.

The 'Dogs return home next weekend, hosting the first of back-to-back home meets at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School. The Bulldog Invitational will begin at noon on April 22.
