Takeuchi fires first round 72 to lead ‘Dogs at MW Championship

The Bulldogs tee off round two starting at 7:40 a.m. on Saturday morning
TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Russell Takeuchi paced the Fresno State men's golf team to open the 2017 Mountain West Championship on Friday. He is tied for 19th overall while the team is tied for eighth.
Takeuchi fired an even-par 72 in the first round. He had 14 pars, including seven-straight to close the day. The senior's par total tied for the fifth-best of the 55-person field.
With a course that played to a 73.16 average for the field, nearly half that group played the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National under-par to position the remaining four Bulldogs looking up.
Senior Trevor Clayton (74) and junior Justin Avery (74) are tied for 33rd heading into Saturday's second round. Sophomore Alex Lee (76) is tied for 41st while junior Greg Gildea (78) is tied for 48th.
As a team, Fresno State carded an 8-over-par 296 for its tie for eighth alongside Air Force and Nevada. The 'Dogs posted a 1-under-par front-nine, but dropped behind with a 9-over-par back-nine – when counting the top four scores in the team format.
Round two of the Mountain West Men's Golf Championship continues Saturday at 7 a.m. Fresno State will tee off every eight minutes starting at 7:40 a.m., with team-leader Takeuchi going last at 8:12 a.m. Live results can be found at Golfstat.com.
