The Fresno State baseball team won its second straight game on Tuesday evening defeating Cal Poly 6-3 at Baggett Stadium as the 'Dogs held the Mustangs to four hits.
Fresno State (20-20) was led by a pair of multi-hit performances from junior first baseman Aaron Arruda and senior third baseman Jesse Medrano as the pair each finished with two hits. Arruda finished with a double and his fourth home run in two games, two runs scored and an RBI. Medrano had a pair of extra-base hits smacking his 14th double of the season and added his third triple of the year.
Cal Poly (18-21) was limited to four hits, including a pair for extra-bases, as designated hitter Michael Sanderson and catcher Myles Emmerson each had a double.
Staying hot offensively, the 'Dogs jumped out all over Mustang starter Kyle Smith in the top of the first as senior outfielder Jake Stone and Arruda drew one-out walks followed by senior second baseman Scott Silva reaching on an error by Mustang shortshop Kyle Marinconz. With the bases-loaded and two out, Medrano shot an 0-1 pitch to right center for a three-base hit clearing the bases and giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.
After senior outfielder Austin Guibor was stranded in the second after smacking a two-out double, Fresno State continued to pound the ball in the third inning with its second three-run frame of the game as Arruda led off with his 10th home run of the season smacking the ball to left center.
Silva followed with his 12th double of the season with a ball to right field as he came around to score on a double by Medrano. An RBI single through the right side by Bins drove in Medrano to take a 6-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings by starter JJ Santa Cruz and two more from freshman right-hander Ryan Jensen, the Mustangs finally broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a pair of runs off Mark Reece getting a two-run double to left field by catcher Myles Emmerson to cut the 'Dogs lead to 6-2.
After Bulldog relief pitcher Fred Schlichtholz put up three scoreless innings, the Mustangs added a run in the top of the eighth on a one-out double to right center by Sanderson off Dominic Topoozian that trimmed the Bulldogs lead to 6-3.
Topoozian worked a spotless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season as Jensen won his second game of the season.
The 'Dogs return home on Friday to host San Jose State in a three-game Mountain West weekend series that will see Fibber Hirayama's jersey retirement on Sunday as well as head coach Mike Batesole possibly picking up his 500th career win at Fresno State as he now sits only two wins away.
