FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team fell 6-3 on Friday evening to San Jose State in the series opener against the Spartans at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (20-21, 9-10 MW) was held to six hits on the evening for its fewest hits in a game since March 25 against San Diego State. The Bulldogs were also held without an extra-base hit for the only the third time this season. Senior second baseman Scott Silva had his 12th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles and scored a run. Four other Bulldogs had singles in the contest.Â
San Jose State (15-24-1, 8-12-1 MW) pounded out nine hits, including three for extra-bases as third baseman David Campbell and designated hitter Johnny Mendoza each had a double and first baseman Shane Timmons knocked out his sixth home run of the season.
The Spartans offense got started early with a five-run top of the first as SJSU combined for six hits off Bulldog starting pitcher Edgar Gonzalez as Timmons hit a two-run home run to left center to give the visitors a quick 2-0 lead. San Jose continued to supply the offense with four straight two-out hits getting an RBI single up the middle by Campbell and after second baseman Michael Breen scored on a balk by Gonzalez, Campbell completed the scoring as he was driven in on an RBI double down the left field line by Mendoza.
The 'Dogs got one run back in the bottom of the frame as a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Zach Ashford brought in junior first baseman Aaron Arruda to cut the Spartans' lead to 5-1. After two scoreless innings, the Spartans extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to third base by shortstop Aaron Pleschner plated Mendonza.
Fresno State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Scott Silva led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch and came home to score on an RBI single to center field by Carter Bins. With Ashford getting on board drawing a second straight walk, he moved to third on a single by Bins and came around to score on a single to left field by senior outfielder Austin Guibor to cut SJSU's lead to 6-3.
Neither side scored in the final four innings as the 'Dogs were held to only one hit over that stretch. SJSU starting pitcher Matt Brown picked up his fourth win of the season tossing seven innings allowing only five hits, three earned runs and struck out nine. Zach Tanner came on for the final two innings to notch his first save of the season.
Gonzalez suffered his third loss of the season tossing five innings allowing nine hits, six runs, five earned and struck out four. Senior Dominic Topoozian tossed three hitless innings striking out three, while junior southpaw Fred Schlichtholz tossed the ninth inning striking out a pair.
