FRESNO, Calif. - Continuing to stay red-hot from the plate, the Fresno State baseball team dominated New Mexico 16-2 on Saturday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium to win the series over the Lobos.
Thanks to an 18-11 win by San Diego State at Air Force earlier in the day, the Bulldogs have officially clinched a spot in the Mountain West Tournament (May 25-28).
Winning its 10th game in its last 12 and winning its first series over the Lobos since 2015, the 'Dogs were absolutely dominant at the plate pounding out 16 hits and scoring 16 runs. Leading the way on the evening was junior outfielder Jared Akins who went 3-for-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and scored three runs. Senior outfielder Jake Stone was a triple shy of the cycle finishing with a single, double and a home run, drove in three RBIs and tied his career-high with four runs scored.
Scoring first for the 31st time this season, the 'Dogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Akins' fifth home run of the season as he sent a 2-1 ball to deep center field.
The 'Dogs added four runs in the bottom of the third to break open the game as senior outfielder Austin Guibor scored on a double steal with Stone before Akins knocked home Stone on a single to right field. The hits kept on coming as senior second baseman Scott Silva followed with his eighth home run of the season knocking a two-run home run to left-center to give the 'Dogs a six-run cushion.
After being held scoreless for 10 straight innings, New Mexico finally broke through on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly by shortstop Hayden Schilling that scored first baseman Carl Stajduhar from third base.
The Bulldogs answered the Lobos' run with one run of their own as Stone laced a one-out double to right-center to drive in freshman catcher Carter Bins from second base before Akins launched his second home run of the game with a three-run shot to right field to put the 'Dogs ahead 10-1. The scoring continued in the fourth with three more runs as Batesole drove in a pair lacing his fourth triple of the season down the left field line and Batesole came around to score on a wild pitch as the 'Dogs held a commanding 13-1 lead.
The runs kept coming in the fifth inning with two more runs as Stone launched the 'Dogs fourth home run of the game with a two-run shot to center field for his sixth home run of the season. An RBI single to right-center by senior Ryan Dobson plated Stone from second to put the 'Dogs up 16-1 and a run in the ninth inning by New Mexico gave Fresno State its largest margin of victory ever over the Lobos.
Sophomore Edgar Gonzalez picked up his fifth win of the season tossing six innings limiting the Lobos to four hits, one run and struck out five. Senior Mark Reece picked up his second save of the season tossing the final three innings allowing only four hits, one run and struck out three.
The 'Dogs go for the series sweep over the Lobos on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Prior to the game, the Bulldogs will honor this year's eight seniors for their contributions to the Bulldog baseball program. It is also Slaute to Services Day as all active military and veterans get into the game for free.

On how long the HRs were today....
"We hit some balls hard, they hit some balls hard. A couple of those home runs, especially the ones to center were hit pretty good. We got one more to go tomorrow and that's the mission, don't get too excited. They're a good ball club. They're well coached. They are going to come out tomorrow with blood in their eyes and we're going to be waiting for them."
Â
Finishing this game with seven of the eight seniors on the diamond together....
"That's a good thing. For Joe  Prior to come in their and Ryan Dobson to come in there, they're such a big part of it. It's a good thing for the fans to get to see what those guys can do. Those two guys work extremely hard and I try to get them in there every second that I can."
Â
On getting the sweep tomorrow....
"It's good for this team to know that you can beat anybody on any day. We felt like that last year when we won the conference championship and that feeling. I haven't felt that feeling since then and I am feeling it now. Everybody is holding on and grabbing on each other and that's what it's all about. Now that they're feeling it, they're not going to lose it. It all starts with the defense. The defense has been playing off the charts. We're pitching quite a bit smarter the last few weeks, that's what it takes. You have to pitch and you have to play defense and when those two are clicking and you have a bold offense that's when you can put together the feeling we've got going right now."
 Â
On the legends that were at the game....
"I don't know which one of the three were having the most fun. They all had big beautiful smiles on their face. What an honor to have them here. 67 pitches in a perfect game, man are you kidding me? That's got to be a record that stands here forever. Don't forget Buzz hit a 2-run jack in that game. Coach Bennet looked like he was 40 years old with a big beautiful smile on his face. That was great to have those three guys down here. The more those guys are around our program and players it is just a beautiful thing."
