"It was a pretty good afternoon," said head coach Mike Batesole after the Bulldogs sweep of the Lobos. "We got off to a great start and had the lead early. Playing against a great offensive team like New Mexico, you just know you have to finish everything. We didn't take our foot off the gas from the first inning on Friday to the last inning today. That's how we have to play every team and I think we have finally found that out. We have been relentless at the plate over the last few weeks and it is really starting to show."
Fresno State (29-22, 16-11 MW) pounded out 15 hits in the contest with four going for extra-bases, including three home runs. Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano matched his career-high with four hits, including his sixth home run of the season, and scored three runs and drove in three RBIs. Senior second baseman Scott Silva nearly matched Medrano with three hits, including his ninth home run of 2017 as the Clovis native also added three RBIs and scored three runs.
Two other Bulldog seniors came up big on Senior Day as Joe Prior launched his second home run of the season and Jake Stone added a single, double, two RBIs and scored a run.
New Mexico (28-23-1, 18-7-1 MW) also had a great day from the plate smacking 17 hits as each of the Lobos first seven hitters in their lineup had multiple hits.
The 'Dogs jumped on the scoreboard right off the bat with four runs in the bottom of the first smacking a pair of two-run home runs. Silva hit his 13th career home run with a shot to left field and after Medrano singled to center field, Prior delivered his fifth career home run with a round-tripper to left field.
The Lobos responded with one run in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle by catcher Robby Campillo that scored left fielder Beau Capanna to cut the 'Dogs lead to 4-1.
New Mexico threatened to close the gap in the top of the third off senior starter Dominic Topoozian as the Lobos loaded the bases with one one, but a critical 6-4-3 double play by the 'Dogs ended the visitors threat. The 'Dogs extended its lead to 5-1 with a run in the third inning on an RBI single through the right side by Medrano that scored Stone from third base. With Topoozian finished after three innings, freshman right-hander Ryan Jensen came on to work the fourth and was greeted with a leadoff home run to left-center by right fielder Andrew Vigil for his third home run of the season.
Scoring in its third half-inning, the 'Dogs plated six more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Senior outfielder Austin Guibor and junior first baseman Aaron Arruda each drove in a run with an RBI single as Guibor came home to score on a passed ball. After an RBI single to left-center by Silva drove in Arruda to put the Bulldogs up by seven, the scoring concluded with a two-run home run by Medrano to right field.
The Lobos continued to pound away at the Bulldogs lead with a three-run home run to left-center by third baseman Andre Gregory to make it 11-5 in favor of the 'Dogs. New Mexico added two runs in the top of the sixth to continue to chip away at the lead as Lobo starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez, who stayed in the game as the designated hitter, came home to score on a wild pitch and shortstop Hayden Schilling scored an unearned run after Gregory reached on a Bulldog error.
The Bulldogs continued to add to the offense in the seventh making it 13-7 with a pair of runs as Stone laced a single to first base that scored freshman catcher Carter Bins and junior shortstop Korby Batesole.
New Mexico added two runs in the top of the eighth on a double down the left field line by Gregory to cut the 'Dogs once again to four (13-9), but a single back up the middle by sophomore Zach Ashford in the bottom of the frame gave the 'Dogs the six-run victory.
Topoozian, who made his third start of the season on Senior Day, picked up the win to improve to 4-2 on the season lasted three innings allowing six hits and one run to go along with three strikeouts, Jensen tossed 1.2 innings striking out a pair before giving way to Rickey Ramirez. The junior right-hander tossed the final 4.1 innings and struck out six to pick up his first save of the season.

Head Coach Mike Batesole
On senior Joe Prior....
"That guy is a gem. He has been a gem for the last four years. We always knew he was going to be a great player when he came to us as an outfielder, but he had that foot surgery that really limited his time on the field here. To see him get in today against the first place team and get the biggest hit of the day, that's really big for him. Especially since his dad was here. We started him as a designated hitter in the lineup so his dad could hear that be read one last time."
On traveling to San Diego State next week....
"These guys have finals this next week and many of them are taking makeup finals early. We will have to do some sort of scrimmage to work on some defensive work we have wanted to squeeze in. We have to be ready to face a different team. Regardless, we'll be in San Diego and ready to go on Thursday."
On junior pitcher Rickey Ramirez...
"One thing that is better is that we have been throwing strikes. We needed to have a strike thrower and that's why we started Dom on the mound. We haven't been walking as much, we are inching forward. Dom put us ahead. Jensen came in and his slider was dirty, they were outstanding throws out of his hand, but some were called strikes and some were called balls. Rickey came in and finished it with exactly what we needed."
