Juniors Ricky Tyler Thomas and Fred Schlichtholz, a pair of San Diego natives, combined to shutout San Diego State 4-0 in the series opener against the Aztecs on Thursday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SAN DIEGO - Behind a sensational starting pitching performance from junior southpaw Ricky Tyler Thomas, the Fresno State baseball team shutout San Diego State 4-0 to push its winning streak to five games as the 'Dogs stayed hot as they have now won 10 of its last 11 games.
"It was one of our most complete games of the season," said an excited head coach Mike Batesole after the game. "Ricky was absolutely sensational all night and the way he pitched tonight he has the ability to beat any team anywhere."
Fresno State (30-22) kept its hopes alive to move up to the second seed in next week's Mountain West Tournament with the win as the 'Dogs slugged out nine hits in the contest. The 'Dogs hit a home run in their 10th straight game picking up multiple home runs in its ninth game in that stretch as junior shortstop Korby Batesole smacked his third home run of the season and freshman catcher Carter Bins added his fourth longball of the year.
Returning back to the San Diego area , senior outfielder Jake Stone had a pair of singles and scored a run while junior first baseman Aaron Arruda added a single and a double along with his MW-leading 61st RBI of the season.
Thomas, a San Diego native, was absolutely sensational in 6.2 innings of work allowing only three Aztec hits, all singles, while striking out seven for his seventh game of the season with at least that many strikeouts. He picked up his fifth straight win as the southpaw is 5-0 with a 3.52 ERA and 31 strikeouts in his last five starts.
Fellow San Diego local junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz came on for the final 2.1 innings to preserve the shutout limiting the Aztecs to one hit and struck out two.
The 'Dogs took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a one-out double to right-center by Arruda that brought home Stone from first base. The Bulldogs kept the offense going in the second as Batesole lifted a two-run home run, his third of the season, to right field to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead.
After being held off the board for three innings, Bins extended the 'Dogs lead to 4-0 to leadoff the sixth for his fourth home run of the season.
Fresno State and San Diego State play the second game of the series on Friday evening at 6 p.m. from Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Notes
- It is the 12th time the 'Dogs have won 30 or more games in a season under Batesole and the 51st time in program history.
- Senior outfielder Austin Guibor played in his 207th career game as a Bulldog as he moved into a tie for 10th all-time in program history tying Philip Romero (1989-92) and Tom Mendonca (2007-09).
- Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano, who moved his hitting streak to 11 games, stole his sixth base of the season and the 20th of his career.
- Senior second baseman Scott Silva saw his 20-game hitting streak come to an end.
- With Nevada's 5-2 win at New Mexico, the Wolf Pack now only need to win one of the final two games of the series with the Lobos to clinch a spot in the Mountain West Tournament. The 'Dogs win over the Aztecs brings the Lobos magic number to clinch the MW regular season title to two.
