Diamond 'Dogs look to stay hot at San Diego State for final MW series [May 18-20]

The Fresno State baseball team heads to San Diego State for its final Mountain West series of the season hoping to improve its seeding for next week's Mountain West Tournament.
FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Fresno State baseball team heads to San Diego State for its final Mountain West series of the season taking on the Aztecs in a three-game series beginning Thursday evening.Â
Games 52-54: Fresno State (29-22, 16-11 MW) at San Diego State (37-16, 19-8 MW)
• Fresno State makes its final road trip of 2017 traveling to San Diego State for its final Mountain West series of the season.
• The 'Dogs are coming a 4-0 week that saw senior third baseman Jesse Medrano earn Mountain West Player of the Week honors and sweep MW-leading New Mexico for its first conference series sweep of the season.
• This year's senior class is coming down the home stretch of their careers and has won 124 games over their four years at Fresno State, won Mountain West championship in 2016 and have combined to play in 1,050 games in their Bulldog careers.
• This will be the Bulldogs second series of the season against the Aztecs as San Diego State won two of three games over the Bulldogs in late March.

Taking a look at the San Diego State Aztecs                                   Â
San Diego State enters this weekend with an overall mark of 37-16 as the Aztecs currently sit in second place in the Mountain West with a 19-8 mark.Â
The Aztecs are 18-9 at home this season and 18-7 on the road with a 1-0 mark at a neutral site. In Mountain West home contests, SDSU is 8-4 with series wins over UNLV, San Jose State and Nevada and won one of three games against first-place New Mexico.
San Diego State is one of the top hitting teams in the country ranking third in the Mountain West and 11th in the nation in batting average at .318. SDSU ranks fourth in the MW and 39th in the nation in scoring at 6.9 runs per game.

Other top hitters include junior outfielder Tyler Adkinson and has a team-leading 27 extra-base hits tallying 12 doubles, one triple and 14 home runs and ranks second in the MW with a .691 slugging percentage. Five other regulars are hitting above .300 as Andrew Brown, Alan Trejo, Chase Calabuig, Andrew Martinez and Jordan Verdon round out a complete lineup for Aztecs that averages 11.3 hits per game.
On the mound, San Diego State has a 3.76 ERA as a staff to lead the MW and are allowing an average of 4.4 runs per game. The Aztecs rank first in the Mountain West in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.22 with 357 strikeouts to 160 walks.
Opponents are hitting .263 against the staff and average 9.0 hits per game. The Aztecs have one of the top arms in the Mountain West in senior left-hander Brett Seeburger who enters the final weekend of MW play with a 9-2 overall record with a 3.89 ERA in 12 starts. Jesse Medrano earns Mountain West Player of the Week honors                                   Â
Hitting a team-leading .562 from the plate on the week helping the 'Dogs go a perfect 4-0, Medrano went 9-for-16 picking up hits in all four games and slugged his sixth home run of the season. Finishing the week with three multi-hit games, he started the week with a pair of singles and scored a run on Tuesday in a 9-2 win over Sacramento State.
With Mountain West-leading New Mexico coming to town over the weekend, Medrano stayed hot against Lobo pitching finishing with a single, RBI and scored a run in Friday's 9-3 win.Â
He added a pair of singles and scored a run on Saturday in the 'Dogs 16-2 dominant win over the Lobos and continued his strong week on Sunday with a stellar Senior Day performance.
Matching his career-high with four hits, including a home run as he was one of three Bulldog seniors to go long, Medrano added three RBIs and scored three runs in the 'Dogs 15-9 win that completed the series sweep over New Mexico.

The 'Dogs have hit 36 doubles, five triples and 28 home runs over that stretch and are averaging 11.1 runs per game.Â
Seven Bulldog regulars are hitting above .300 on the season as Aaron Arruda, Jesse Medrano, Jake Stone, Austin Guibor, Scott Silva and Jared Akins have each played in at least 50 games and have helped drive an offense that is among the nation's best ranking in the top 20 in the nation in doubles (12th-114), hits (6th - 589), batting average (14th - ..314), runs (21st - 377) and slugging percentage (16th - .481).

Guibor set to move into the top 10 all-time in games played
Senior outfielder Austin Guibor will play in his 207th career game as a Bulldog this weekend which will tie him for 10th all-time with Philip Romero (1989-92) and Tom Mendonca (2007-09). With at least six games remaining, he will finish with at least 212 games played which will put him ninth all-time in program history.

Thomas on a late-season surge
Junior southpaw Ricky Tyler Thomas has been on a late-season push as he has picked up wins in his last four MW starts posting a 4-0 with a 4.50 ERA. In 24.0 innings of work, Thomas has 24 strikeouts while only allowing 12 earned runs and has held opponents to a .250 average from the plate.

The 'Dogs have hit a home run in nine consecutive games slugging multiple home runs in eight of those contests and with 54 on the season has the most in a season since 2010.

Aaron Arruda moves into the top 15 in program history in home runs                                  Â
With a home run on Friday in the 'Dogs 9-3 win over New Mexico, Arruda now has 14 home runs and 26 in his career. His 14 home runs on the season are currently tied for 19th all-time and are the most in a season since Dusty Robinson had 16 in 2011.Â
His 26 career long balls put him in 15th and he can move into the top 10 all-time with four more home runs.
A look at the 'Dogs eight seniors                                       Â
Eight Bulldog seniors are seeing their careers come down the home stretch as they play their final Mountain West road series at SDSU this weekend. Last Sunday, they were honored on Senior Day and will play at home one more time next Monday vs. Gonzaga. The class has the most wins for a senior class with 124 since the 2013 class finished with 132.

With the start of the Mountain West Tournament set to begin next Thursday (May 25), this weekend's final MW series will determine where and what teams will be participating for an opportunity to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
New Mexico has to match or be a win ahead of San Diego State in their respective weekend series for the tournament to be at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque. San Diego State needs to stay one win ahead of New Mexico in their respective series to host at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.

Aaron Arruda moves into the top 15 in program history in home runs                                  Â
With a home run on Friday in the 'Dogs 9-3 win over New Mexico, Arruda now has 14 home runs and 26 in his career. His 14 home runs on the season are currently tied for 19th all-time and are the most in a season since Dusty Robinson had 16 in 2011.Â
His 26 career long balls put him in 15th and he can move into the top 10 all-time with four more home runs.
A look at the 'Dogs eight seniors                                       Â
Eight Bulldog seniors are seeing their careers come down the home stretch as they play their final Mountain West road series at SDSU this weekend. Last Sunday, they were honored on Senior Day and will play at home one more time next Monday vs. Gonzaga. The class has the most wins for a senior class with 124 since the 2013 class finished with 132.

Mountain West Tournament Scenarios
With the start of the Mountain West Tournament set to begin next Thursday (May 25), this weekend's final MW series will determine where and what teams will be participating for an opportunity to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
New Mexico has to match or be a win ahead of San Diego State in their respective weekend series for the tournament to be at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque. San Diego State needs to stay one win ahead of New Mexico in their respective series to host at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.
