The Bulldogs and Aztecs play the rubber match of the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the loss, the 'Dogs have assured themselves the number three seed in next week's Mountain West Tournament. Nevada defeated New Mexico 17-9 in Albuquerque on Friday to clinch a spot in the MW Tournament as the Aztecs now sit only one win shy of clinching the MW regular season title and hosting the MW Tournament.
Fresno State (30-23, 17-12 MW), who won the series opener on Thursday 4-0, lost for only the second time in its last 12 games as Aztec starting pitcher Brett Seeburger and reliever Harrison Pyatt held the 'Dogs to eight hits in the contest. The senior duo of Scott Silva and Jesse Medrano combined for five of those base knocks as Silva had three singles and scored a run while Medrano had a pair of hits for extra-bases smacking his 18th double and fourth triple of the season and drove in all three runs.
San Diego State (38-17, 20-9 MW) slugged out 17 hits as eight of the nine starting position players had hits with seven of them going for multiple hits. Andrew Martinez and Dean Nevarez each had three hits apiece as SDSU totaled four doubles and added a home run by Nevarez.
The 'Dogs jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning for the second consecutive night plating a pair of runs on an RBI double to left field by Medrano that drove in senior outfielder Austin Guibor and junior first baseman Aaron Arruda who each collected their lone hit in the first inning.
SDSUÂ answered back in the bottom of the frame cutting the 'Dogs lead in half scoring an unearned run after leadoff hitter Alan Trejo reached base on a throwing error by Medrano and came home to score on a single to right-center by center fielder Chase Calabuig.
After Aztec starter Brett Seeburger settled down in the next two innings to hold the 'Dogs hitless, San Diego State took its first lead of the series with a two-run bottom of the third tying the game on an RBI single by Trejo and took the lead on an RBI groundout by shortstop Danny Sheehan.
San Diego State added a run in the fourth inning on a single to center field by Nevarez that almost brought in a pair of runs, but Bulldog center fielder Ryan Dobson tossed out Martinez at the plate to keep it a 4-2 contest.
With Seeburger holding the Bulldogs without a hit for two more innings, the 'Dogs finally got a hit in the sixth with a single through the left side by Silva and an error prior allowed Arruda to get on base to put a pair in scoring position, but were unable to close the gap.
The Aztecs added five runs in the sixth, including a bases-clearing double by left fielder Tyler Adkison, to take a 9-2 lead and added three more in the seventh and one in the eighth. The 'Dogs added a run in the eighth on a triple to left field by Medrano to score Silva from first base.
The Bulldogs and Aztecs play the final game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. from Tony Gwynn Stadium.
