Home runs power 'Dogs past Aztecs, 11-2

Winning its fourth consecutive Mountain West series and its 11th game in its last 13, the Fresno State baseball team defeated San Diego State 11-2 on Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium behind four home runs by three different 'Dogs.
With the win coupled along with New Mexico's 13-6 win at home over Nevada, the Lobos claimed the Mountain West regular season title and will host the Mountain West Tournament in Albuquerque beginning on Thursday.
Fresno State (31-23, 18-12 MW) finishes third in the MW behind New Mexico and SDSU and will enter next week's tournament as the third-seed in the four-team tournament.
The 'Dogs picked up 11 hits in the contest, including four home runs by three different Bulldogs. Senior outfielder Jake Stone smacked a pair of home runs and scored three runs as the San Diego native now has eight home runs this season and 12 in his career. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda smacked a three-run home run and added a single while scoring two runs.
Senior outfielder Austin Guibor added a pair of singles, scored two runs and drove in two RBIs while junior cleanup hitter Jared Akins added two hits, including his seventh home run of the season, scored two runs and drove in two RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford added a pair of singles , an RBI and scored a run.
San Diego State (38-18, 20-10 MW) finished with 13 hits, all singles, as four Aztecs finished with multi-hit games led by left fielder Tyler Adkison's three hits and an RBI.
The 'Dogs scored first for the third game in the series in the third inning as Arruda launched his 15th home run of the season to left field giving the ''Dogs a quick 3-0 lead.
The Aztecs quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single to right field by Adkison to cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-1.
Continuing to be able to get to SDSU starting pitcher Cody Thompson, the 'Dogs picked up four more runs off the senior on Senior Day in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
Ashford reached on a fielder's choice, stole his fifth base of the season to move to second and after junior shortstop Korby Batesole drew a walk, a sacrifice bunt from freshman catcher Carter Bins moved the pair over with a sacrifice bunt. With a pair of runners in scoring position for Guibor, the senior delivered with a single through left side to drive in Ashford and Batesole for his 34th and 35 RBIs of the season.
Stone followed with his seventh home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field and Ashford added an RBI single up the middle in the fifth to increase the 'Dogs lead to 8-1.
SDSU scored its last run of the afternoon in the seventh on an RBI groundout to make it 8-2, but three late runs by the Bulldogs in the ninth with a solo shot by Stone and a two-run longball by Stone made the final score 11-2.
Senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian made his fourth start of the season tossing the first four innings allowing seven hits and only one run before giving way to junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz for a pair of shutout innings. Junior right-hander Rickey Ramirez came on for the final three innings to pick up his second save of the season after tossing the final 4.1 innings on Sunday in a 15-9 win over New Mexico.
The Bulldogs close out the regular season on Monday evening hosting Gonzaga (30-17) at 6:05 p.m. for the final home game of 2017 before Mountain West Tournament play begins on Thursday from Santa Ana Star Field in Albuqueruqe.
Notes
- The Bulldogs have now won 13 of its last 16 games dating back to April 23 at Nevada.
- It was Arruda's 27th career home run as he moves into a tie for 14th place all-time with Steve Vondran (1988-89) and his 15 on the season sit him in a five-way tie for 15th-most in a single season.
- Arruda picked up three RBIs on his home run and now has 64 RBIs on the year as he will finish the season leading the season leading the Mountain West in that category.
- It was Stone's 11th & 12th career home runs.
- A night after recording his first career triple, Akins hit his seventh home run of the season.
- The 'Dogs finished the MW conference season winning seven of their 10 series, including its final four, and finished 8-7 on the road and 10-5 at home.
- A night after seeing its 10-game home run streak end, the 'Dogs smacked four home runs for its fourth game this season with four or more longballs. The Bulldogs now have 60 home runs on the season.
