The Fresno State baseball team closed out the regular season on Monday night with a 9-2 win over Gonzaga at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team closed out the regular season on Monday night with a 9-2 win over Gonzaga at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
"It was a great win over the WCC champions and the start to hopefully a big week for the Bulldogs," said head coach Mike Batesole after the win.
Fresno State (32-23) ends the regular season and enters this week's Mountain West Tournament winners of 12 of its last 14 games and 14 of its last 17 contests. The 'Dogs pounded out nine hits on Monday as seven different Bulldogs recorded a hit. For the 11th time in its last 13 games, the Bulldogs registered multiple home runs as both senior third baseman Jesse Medrano and sophomore Jeremiah Burks went yard as the 'Dogs added doubles from junior Jared Akins and sophomore Zach Ashford.
Gonzaga (31-18), who lost for only the fourth time since April 13, slugged out 10 hits as nine different Zags had a hit in the contest.
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs as a hit by pitch by Medrano with the bases-loaded brought in the game's first run and an RBI groundout by Akins drove in junior first baseman Aaron Arruda who reached base on an intentional walk.Â
The Zags responded with a run in the top of the second to cut the 'Dogs lead in half with a sacrifice fly to left field by first baseman Jordan Vieth.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field by junior shortstop Korby Batesole to make it 3-1 in favor of the 'Dogs.
Gonzaga kept the 'Dogs within arm reach in the top of the sixth with a single to right-center by left fielder Sam Brown to make it 3-2.
The game turned in the bottom of the frame as the 'Dogs added four unearned runs after a dropped third strike got away from the Gonzaga catcher and gave the Bulldogs new life. Fresno State.scored on a single back up the middle by Ashford that drove in freshman Carter Bins before Burks launched a three-run home run to left field for his first home run of the season to extend the Bulldogs lead to 7-2.Â
After Arruda led off the seventh with a hit by pitch, Medrano padded the 'Dogs lead to 9-2 with a two-run shot to left-center for his seventh home run of the season.
Junior left-hander JJ Santa Cruz made his ninth start of the season tossing three innings allowing five hits and one run with a pair of strikeouts before giving way to Mark Reece who came on in relief for 2.1 innings to pick up his first win of the season as the senior right-hander held Gonzaga to three hits and one run. Freshman Ryan Jensen, Adam Medrano and Davis Moore came on to complete the game as Moore tossed the final two innings allowing one hit and struck out two.
Fresno State now sets its sights on the postseason as they head to the Mountain West Tournament hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque at Santa Star Field. The number three seed in the field, the 'Dogs start play on Thursday afternoon against the second-seeded San Diego State Aztecs at 2 p.m PT.
