Bins named Co-Mountain West Freshman of the Year; six 'Dogs earn All-MW honors

Six Fresno State baseball student-athletes along with freshman catcher Carter Bins earned Mountain West postseason honors, as announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon. All selections were voted upon by the league coaches based off conference-only statistics.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Six Fresno State baseball student-athletes along with freshman catcher Carter Bins earned Mountain West postseason honors, as announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon. All selections were voted upon by the league coaches based off conference-only statistics.
Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano, junior left-handed pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas and junior first baseman Aaron Arruda were tabbed first-team selections, while senior second baseman Scott Silva, senior outfielder Jake Stone and sophomore right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez were selected to the second-team. In addition, Bins was selected as the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year along with UNLV shortstop Bryson Stott.
Bins becomes the 11th Freshman of the Year honored by a conference in program history. The first Bulldog freshman since Aaron Judge was named Freshman of the Year by the WAC in 2011, Bins is the fourth freshman under head coach Mike Batesole to be earn Rookie of the Year honors joining Beau Mills (2005) and Danny Muno (2008) who also each earned the honor in the WAC. Brad Bennett (1978), Greg Funk (1980), John Hoover (1981) and Joe Xavier (1982) were each named Freshman of the Year in the NCBA while Giuseppe Chiaramonte (1995), Jeff Weaver (1996) and Tom Creighton (1999) earned the honor in the WAC.
Appearing in all 30 Mountain West conference games and making 29 starts behind the plate at catcher, Bins hit .266 from the dish finishing with 25 hits, including seven for extra-bases. The Fairfield, Calif., native notched three doubles, one triple and three home runs, scored 20 runs, drove in 14 RBIs and recorded six multi-hit games.Â
Finishing with a .389 on-base percentage and a .415 slugging percentage, Bins went 3-for-4 with double, home run, three RBIs and scored two runs in a 10-8 win at Air Force on March 18. Starting 49 of the 'Dogs 55 games behind the plate on the season, Bins put together a stellar .991 fielding percentage only making two errors.
A year after having a Mountain West-leading eight All-MW selections, Fresno State, joined by San Diego State, again led the conference with six selections. The 'Dogs now have 24 All-MW selections since joining the conference in 2013 with 12 being named to the first team and 12 being named to the second team.
"We are very proud of what our team has accomplished on and off the field," said Bulldog head coach Mike Batesole. "Along with these six All-Mountain West selections, all of our seniors have graduated and to have the Mountain West Freshman of the Year means our future has a star in it which is very exciting," added Batesole.
Named to the Preseason All-MW Team prior to the season, Thomas and Arruda came through with stellar junior campaigns as each were named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Silva and Stone were both named to the second team for the second straight season as well while Medrano and Gonzalez earned postseason honors for the first time in their careers.
After a slow start to the conference season, Thomas came on strong down the stretch winning his final five Mountain West starts as the San Diego native led the MW in opposing batting average (.232), finished second in wins (6) & ERA (3.86) and third in strikeouts (51) & runs allowed (26). A two-time Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honoree this season, Thomas had five MW starts with six or more strikeouts and had a pair of standout starts in wins over San Jose State (April 29) and San Diego State (May 18).
Arruda, also a repeat All-MW first-team selection, put together a fantastic Mountain West season from the plate starting all 30 games at first base hitting .372 from the dish with 45 hits, five doubles, one triple and seven home runs, scored 29 runs and drove in 31 RBIs. The Clovis native had nine multi-RBI games and 14 multi-hit games, including a memorable 4-for-4 performance with three home runs, four runs scored and nine RBIs in a 27-5 win at Nevada on April 23.
Medrano, a senior who has played in 185 career games for the 'Dogs, started all 30 games for the Bulldogs at third base hitting .328 from the dish with 41 hits, including 16 for extra-bases. The Concord, Calif., native slugged eight doubles, three triples and added five home runs while driving in 23 RBIs and scored 30 runs, a mark that tied for 10th in the MW. He tallied 11 multi-hit games and eight multi-run games scoring a career-high four runs on April 30 in a 16-8 win at home over San Jose State going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run and drove in two RBIs.
Silva, who has played in 94 games for the 'Dogs in his two seasons, started all 30 games at second base hitting .356 from the plate to finish 20th in the MW. The Clovis native who arrived at Fresno State in 2016 led the team with 47 hits in MW games to rank sixth in the conference and totaled 10 doubles, one triple and seven home runs. Silva added 27 runs scored and 32 RBIs along with adding 14 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI contests.
He tallied multi-hits in nine of 10 games from April 23-May 14 recording a hit in all 10 games, scored a run in nine of the contests and added an RBI in eight games. He matched his career-best with a pair of four-hit performances at Air Force (March 19) and home against San Jose State (April 30) combining for two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and scored four runs in the two contests.
Stone, who has played in 194 career games at Fresno State, earned his second All-MW Second-Team honor after starting all 30 games in the outfield in MW play hitting .327 from the dish. The Carlsbad, Calif., native totaled 37 hits, including 17 for extra-bases finishing with nine doubles, one triple and seven home runs. Stone added 25 RBIs and scored 32 runs tallying 11 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI contests. He finished with five three-hit contests, scored a career-best four runs twice and drove in a career-high four RBIs twice in wins over Air Force (April 13) and UNLV (May 6).
Finally, Gonzalez earned his first career All-MW postseason honor after posting a 5-3 record with a 4.86 ERA tossing 50.0 innings while striking out 45 to rank sixth in the MW. The Newark, Calif., native allowed the second fewest doubles (7) and the fifth fewest runs (29) in the MW while making starts in the final six MW series of the season. He picked up three wins over Air Force (April 13), at UNLV (May 6) and at home against New Mexico (May 13) as he was especially sharp against the Lobos limiting a dangerous UNM offense to four hits and one earned run while striking out five in a 16-2 win to clinch a spot in the Mountain West Tournament. Â
The number-three seed Bulldogs open the Mountain West Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field at 2:00 p.m. PT against second-seeded San Diego State.
