Bulldogs honor seniors in final MWÂ home series of season
The Fresno State softball team, who is still in the hunt for an outright Mountain West title, returns home to Margie Wright Diamond this weekend as the Bulldogs are set to face New Mexico in their final MW home series of the season. The 'Dogs will honor their four seniors and are scheduled to face the Lobos on Friday at 6 p.m. PT, Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at noon. All three games will air live and for free on the Mountain West Network.
Â
Fresno State must continue its momentum after sweeping UNLV in Las Vegas last weekend, scoring the go-ahead runs in the final inning of each game, the first time the Bulldogs have done so in a MW series over the last five seasons. Following their road sweep against the Rebels, the 'Dogs' RPI improved to 52.
Â
History is in the Bulldogs' favor this weekend as they lead the all-time series against New Mexico 41-5 and have won 10 of 11 series between the teams. Fresno State is 14-8 at home this year, including 4-5 in conference play.
Â
Sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung, who was named MW Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, looks to continue her three-game winning streak after pitching all 23 innings against UNLV and recording her MW-best seventh shutout last Saturday. Dung went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and 12 strikeouts, while allowing only three walks and four extra-base hits in the series.
Â
The Bulldogs have continued to show the importance of offense to their success, going 19-2 when they score five runs or more and 4-15 when scoring three or fewer. Sophomore outfielder Morgan Howe has led the charge in MW play, hitting .446 (25-56) with two home runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs. The 'Dogs have also seen power coming from the middle of the lineup during conference games, with senior Lindsey Willmon (5 HR, 15 RBI), junior Savannah McHellon (4 HR, 14 RBI) and sophomore Vanessa Hernandez (3 HR, 13 RBI) with the most production.
Â
How the Bulldogs can win an outright MWÂ title
The Bulldogs are still alive in the hunt for an outright Mountain West title if the cards fall just right. For Fresno State to win the MW, the 'Dogs must win their final six games, Utah State must get swept by San Jose State this weekend and the Spartans must then get swept by UNLV next weekend. Also, over their final six games, Nevada needs to lose two and San Diego State has to drop one.

Bulldogs earn road sweep over UNLV
Last weekend, Fresno State swept UNLV in Las Vegas for its first conference sweep of the season. In each of the three games, the Bulldogs scored the go-ahead runs in the final inning, the first time the 'Dogs have done so since joining the MW in 2013.
Â
Sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung threw all 23 inning for the Bulldogs, including her MW-best seventh shutout of the season on Saturday, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and allowing only three walks and four extra-base hits in the series.
Â
The Bulldogs needed an extra-innings rally to take down UNLV on a windy Friday night in Sin City as the Fresno State softball team defeated the Rebels 6-4 in nine innings at Eller Media Stadium. The 'Dogs took game one of a Mountain West series for the fifth time in six opportunities this year.
Â
Heading into the ninth inning with the game tied 4-4, freshman Haley Fuller led off with a single to left and was pinch run for by sophomore Kaitlyn Jennings. Senior Malia Rivers then reached on an error and freshman Miranda Rohleder knocked Jennings in with a single up the middle. Sophomore Morgan Howe came up to the plate immediately after and sent Rivers home with a single to left to give the Bulldogs their final lead of the game.
Â
Dung pitched all nine innings for the Bulldogs, matching her career-high. She struck out seven batters and allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk. Senior Lindsey Willmon hit a home run for the third time in four games, her seventh of the year, and the 'Dogs saw four players record two hits each in Howe, Rivers, Rohleder and Willmon.
Â
Fresno State's 10 hits, eight of which were singles, were the most in a game since recording 12 against Nevada on April 1. This was the sixth extra-innings game for the Bulldogs this year and was the ninth time they hit in double digits.
Â
A game filled with exciting defensive plays and lights-out pitching went the way of the Bulldogs as the Fresno State softball team shut out UNLV 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas. Dung, starting for the second game in as many days, threw her Mountain West-best seventh shutout of the season and the 'Dogs scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh to clinch their third MW series of the year.
Â
Each team showed a solid defensive effort until the Bulldogs put together three seventh-inning hits and took advantage of two Rebel miscues to put themselves ahead. The Bulldogs scattered seven hits in the game, while the Rebels didn't record their first hit until one out in the sixth.
Â
Dung allowed two hits or less in a start for the fifth time this season, needing only two strikeouts to record her 19th win and lowering her ERA to 2.22. The Rebels saw freshman Breana Burke throw her first collegiate complete game on Saturday, allowing one earned run on seven hits and no walks. She also struck out two in the campaign.Â
Â
For the second game in a row, sophomore Morgan Howe recorded two hits, including her fifth double of the season, while sophomore Vanessa Hernandez accounted for Bulldogs' other extra-base hit, knocking an RBI-double. Hernandez, who leads the team with 17 extra-base hits, notched her first since getting a double at Utah State on April 7.
Â
Junior Savannah McHellon (2-for-3) got the Bulldogs' seventh-inning rally going with a single, senior Kierra Willis knocked in the go-ahead run, and sophomore Dominique Jackson's RBI was her second of the year. Freshman Haley Fuller recorded a career-high five putouts, including three athletic plays in foul territory, and freshman second baseman Miranda Rohleder notched four assists for the third time this season.
Â
For the first time this season, the Fresno State softball team came from behind in the seventh inning to complete the Bulldogs' sweep of UNLV with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas. The 'Dogs went into the final frame down 3-1 and used a combination of two doubles, a single and a walk to come out ahead.
Â
Dung, who started all three games of a MW series for the first time in her career, was the first Fresno State pitcher to start and win all three games of a MW series since Jill Compton did so April 24-26, 2015, against Nevada. Over the weekend, Dung threw all 23 innings for the Bulldogs, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and allowing only four extra-base hits and three walks.
Â
Junior Savannah McHellon (1-3, HR) hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season in the fourth to get the Bulldogs on the board and freshman Miranda Rohleder (1-3, R, 2 RBI) hit a two-run double to tie the game and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI-single by sophomore Morgan Howe (1-4, RBI) to clinch the Bulldogs' first MW sweep of the season. Going into Sunday, the Bulldogs were 0-13 when trailing after six innings and the Rebels were 17-1 when leading after four.
Â
Sophomore Vanessa Hernandez recorded a double for the second straight game, increasing her Bulldog-best extra-base hit total to 18 this year, including 12 doubles. Howe has recorded at least one hit in each of the last six games and McHellon has reached base safely in the last eight. Rohleder has notched multiple RBIs in seven games this year.
